Factory matte paint is a clear coat engineered to scatter light instead of reflecting it, which creates the flat, satin look on cars like a BMW M4 in Frozen Grey or a Mercedes-AMG G 63 in magno. On gloss paint, a detailer can polish out swirls and light etching. On matte paint, polishing flattens the texture and leaves a shiny patch that never blends back. In Dubai, the risks pile up fast: summer surfaces near 50°C, bird droppings that bake in within an hour, sand blasted across the front at 120 km/h on the E11, and two or three washes a week. One careless wash or one baked-on stain can mean a respray of the whole panel.
What is XPEL STEALTH and how does it work on matte paint?
XPEL STEALTH is a satin-finish version of XPEL’s self-healing urethane paint protection film. Applied over matte paint, it preserves the low-sheen look and takes the abrasion, chips and staining that would otherwise mark the clear coat.
The film has a textured top layer that diffuses light, so a matte car stays matte. Light swirls in the film surface heal with warmth, and XPEL’s product care guidance says light scratches self-heal in 20 to 30 minutes at room temperature. Dubai’s ambient heat does most of that work for you.
STEALTH also works the other way round. On gloss paint, it converts the finish to satin, which is popular on black Range Rovers, Audi RS 6 Avants and Porsche 911s. The film is removable, so the original gloss returns when it comes off.
Why can’t you simply polish or wax matte paint?
Because polishing works by levelling the surface, and matte paint relies on an uneven surface. Any abrasive, from a polishing compound to a glaze-heavy wax, fills or flattens that texture and creates shiny spots.
That leaves matte owners with very few repair options on bare paint:
- Light marks: sometimes cleaned with a dedicated matte cleaner, but etching from bird droppings or sap usually stays.
- Scratches through the clear coat: cannot be polished, so the panel normally needs refinishing.
- Respray: matching a factory matte finish is difficult, and a mismatched panel is obvious in daylight.
- Gloss creep: automatic washes and harsh brushes slowly burnish high points, so the car gains patchy shine over time.
With STEALTH over the paint, the damage happens in the film instead. A badly marked panel of film can be replaced, which costs far less than refinishing a factory matte door or bonnet.

Will XPEL STEALTH change how my matte paint looks?
Very slightly, and mostly for the better. STEALTH has its own satin sheen, so on a deep flat finish it can read as a touch smoother, while on most factory matte or frozen paints it is hard to tell where film starts.
The look depends on the base paint. Very flat finishes, such as some Lamborghini opaco colours, show the most difference. We lay a test piece on a hidden area during inspection so you can see the result in daylight before deciding. That step takes minutes and removes the guesswork.
Gloss PPF, STEALTH or ceramic: which suits matte paint?
STEALTH is the right film for matte paint. Gloss PPF would turn the car shiny, and ceramic coating alone does not stop chips or scratches.

Ceramic still has a role. A matte-safe coating over the STEALTH film makes bugs and sand rinse off easily. Ask us to quote both together if you want the easiest possible wash routine.
How do I care for matte paint protected with STEALTH?
Wait 48 hours after installation before the first wash, then hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and avoid waxes, polishes and gloss-enhancing products. XPEL recommends its Ceramic Boost at least every six months to help preserve the satin finish.
- Remove bird droppings and bug splatter the same day, as Dubai heat bakes them in.
- Keep pressure washer jets away from film edges.
- Skip automatic brush washes, which burnish the surface and can lift edges.
- Dry with a clean microfibre towel or a blower, never a chamois with grit trapped in it.
