PPF and Ceramic Coating Together: Why Combining Both Works

Using PPF and ceramic coating together gives a car physical protection and an easy-clean gloss in one package. The film absorbs stone chips and scratches on the panels that take the hits, and a ceramic coating on top adds gloss, water beading and resistance to contamination. We combine both at Apex Detail Studio in Al Quoz, Dubai. Can you use PPF and ceramic coating together?

Yes. Paint protection film goes on first, and a ceramic coating is then applied over the film and any paint the film does not cover. The two products do different jobs, so they complement rather than compete.

PPF is a thermoplastic polyurethane film, sometimes called a clear bra, that physically shields the paint from rock chips, scratches and minor abrasions. Light swirls in the film self-heal with heat. Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to the surface once cured and forms a hydrophobic layer: water beads and runs off, dirt struggles to stick, and acidic contamination such as bird droppings and tree sap is less likely to bite.

On its own, each has a gap. Film is not as slick or as glossy as a fresh coating. A coating cannot stop a stone. Put together, the car gets both, which is why combining them is the setup we recommend most often for cars that will be kept for years. What does each layer do when you combine PPF and ceramic?

The film is the impact layer and the coating is the surface layer. Each one covers what the other cannot.

The practical result is a car that resists chips like a filmed car and washes like a coated one. A coating over the film also improves the film’s own hydrophobic behaviour, so dust and water leave the surface more readily.

Which panels get PPF and which get ceramic coating?

The usual approach is PPF on the high-impact areas, such as the bonnet, front bumper, mirrors and headlights, and ceramic coating over the entire car including the film. Owners who want maximum protection choose full-body film with ceramic on top.

We see two common layouts:

• Front-end PPF plus full-car ceramic: film on the bonnet, bumper, mirrors and headlights, where gravel strikes most, with the whole car coated for gloss and easy washing. This suits daily drivers and leased cars.
• Full-body PPF plus ceramic: every painted panel filmed, then coated. This suits new cars, supercars and luxury SUVs where a repaint would hurt value.

Door edges, sills and rear arches are worth adding to a front-end package if the car does a lot of highway or sandy-road driving. Wheels and glass can also be coated as part of the same visit, which keeps brake dust and water spots under control.

What finishes can you get when combining PPF and ceramic coating?

You can keep the factory gloss, turn the paint satin or matte, or change the colour, and still add a ceramic coating on top. The film decides the look; the coating decides how easy the surface is to live with.

• Gloss PPF plus ceramic: the most common choice. The clear film is close to invisible, and the coating adds a deep, wet-look gloss over it. This is how we protected a Viola Metallic Porsche 911 Carrera to keep its special colour looking as delivered.
• Satin or matte PPF plus ceramic: the film changes a gloss car to a soft satin finish, and a matte-safe coating keeps it even and stops dust and fingerprints from settling into the texture.
• Colour PPF plus ceramic: a colour-change film gives a new shade with chip protection, and the coating makes the new colour easier to keep clean.

Whichever finish you pick, the order of work is the same: prepare the paint, fit the film, then coat. The paint underneath stays original, so the film can be removed later and the car returns to its factory finish. That is a real advantage at resale, when buyers look closely at paint condition, and it is something a coating on its own cannot offer, because it never stopped the chips in the first place.

Why does combining PPF and ceramic make sense in Dubai?

Dubai combines two threats that need two different solutions: gravel from highways and construction traffic, which only film stops, and sun, sand and hard water, which a coating handles best.

Summer heat above 45C bakes bird droppings and water spots onto panels fast. A coated surface releases them before they etch. Fine desert sand settles on the car daily, and every wash risks dragging it across the surface; on a slick coating it rinses off with less contact. Meanwhile, long runs on Sheikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road throw stones at the front end, which no coating can stop.

Heat also helps the film. The self-healing top layer of quality PPF relies on warmth to level out light swirls, and Dubai provides plenty of it. With a coating on top, those swirls are less likely to form in the first place because the wash mitt glides instead of dragging.

How do we apply PPF and ceramic coating together at Apex?

We prepare the paint, install the film, let it settle, and then coat the film and remaining paint by hand. Everything happens indoors in our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz, in controlled installation bays.

1. Inspection: we check the paint under studio lights and agree the coverage.
2. Wash and decontamination: a full wash, iron and tar removal, and clay where needed.
3. Paint correction: swirls and marks are polished out, because whatever is on the paint ends up under the film.
4. PPF installation: film is cut from DAP precut patterns, so there is no blade on the paint, and edges are wrapped where possible.
5. Ceramic coating: applied by hand over the film and uncovered paint, then cured in a controlled bay.
6. Handover: we explain the aftercare for both products.

How do you care for a car with PPF and ceramic coating?

Wash by hand with a pH-neutral shampoo, use clean microfibre towels, and avoid automatic brush washes. Caring for a filmed and coated car is easier than caring for bare paint, because the coating keeps the film slick.

• Rinse loose sand off before touching the car.
• Wash in the shade, never on a hot panel.
• Keep pressure washer nozzles away from film edges.
• Remove bird droppings the same day.
• Avoid strong degreasers and harsh cleaners, which can weaken the coating’s water beading.
• Have the car inspected periodically so any lifted edge or worn area is dealt with early.

After. The film is installed on prepared paint first, then the coating is applied over the film and any uncovered paint.
