Color Change PPF on a Rolls-Royce Ghost: White to Matte Black in Dubai

A white Rolls-Royce Ghost turned matte black with colour change PPF and a black badge treatment, with the factory paint protected underneath.

Colour change paint protection film (PPF) is a self-healing urethane film in a new colour or finish, installed over the original paint. On this Rolls-Royce Ghost, it turned a gloss white car into a matte black one, while protecting the factory white paint underneath from chips, scratches and sun. The change is fully reversible: when the film comes off, the original paint is still there, in the condition it was protected in.

The owner’s brief was clear. Change the car’s presence completely, but do nothing that harms its originality or its value. Here is how we approached it at our Al Quoz studio, and why PPF was the only material that met that brief.

Why colour change PPF instead of paint or vinyl?

On a Rolls-Royce, every modification has to pass three tests: it must be reversible, it must protect value, and it must respect the factory finish. Here is how the three options compare. For a different approach, see this two-tone Rolls-Royce Ghost with a white PPF roof.

Option Reversible Protects paint Self-healing Effect on value
Full respray No No No Loses originality, can hurt resale
Vinyl wrap Yes Minimal No Neutral, but shorter life in UAE heat
Colour change PPF Yes Yes, against chips and scratches Yes, light marks heal with heat Preserves factory paint underneath

A respray fails the first test immediately. Vinyl passes it, but vinyl is thin, scratches easily, offers little impact protection and does not heal. Colour change PPF is thicker, absorbs stone chips, resists UV, and recovers from light swirls when warmed by the sun. On panels as large as a Ghost’s, that difference shows.

Why matte black on a Ghost?

White is a classic Rolls-Royce colour. Matte black gives the car a completely different character: quieter and heavier. A matte surface absorbs light instead of reflecting it, so the eye reads the shape of the car rather than its reflections. On the Ghost’s long bonnet, upright grille and flowing shoulder line, that makes the proportions stand out. The aim was presence, not aggression.

Choosing the right matte black film

Matte films are not all equal, and the differences only show in strong sunlight. We look for:

  • An even finish: no patchy or blotchy areas across large panels.
  • No milky haze: some matte films look grey or cloudy in direct sun.
  • Thickness: enough film to absorb real stone chip impacts.
  • Adhesive behaviour: strong grip, but repositionable during installation.
  • Heat performance: proven stability through Dubai summers.

How the car was prepared

Matte film locks in whatever is underneath it, so preparation decides the final result.

  1. Wash and decontamination: pH-neutral foam, a two-bucket contact wash, iron fallout remover, tar removal and a clay bar treatment to leave the paint completely clean.
  2. Inspection and polishing: even well-kept cars carry light wash marring. A single-stage machine polish evened out the surface, not for gloss, but so nothing would show through the film.
  3. Panel wipe: a final wipe removes oils so the adhesive bonds evenly.

Installing film on one of the largest panels in the industry

The Ghost’s doors, bonnet and rear quarters are some of the biggest single panels on any production car. We worked panel by panel:

  • Computer-cut patterns, adjusted by hand for this car.
  • Bulk film used where needed so edges could be wrapped and hidden.
  • Edges wrapped around panel edges wherever the structure allows.
  • No exposed cut lines on visible surfaces.

The area around the grille needs the most care. The film has to sit perfectly against the polished grille surround without lifting or distorting, so the matte paintwork and bright grille complement each other instead of competing.

The black badge treatment

A matte black Ghost with bright chrome everywhere would look unfinished. So the brightwork was treated with the same restraint as the body:

  • Front and rear Rolls-Royce badges
  • Boot lettering and side badges
  • Selected chrome accents

Each part was finished to match the depth and tone of the matte film rather than simply blacked out. The wheels kept some contrast so the car did not look too heavy, and the door handles and window trims were matched to the panels around them. The interior was left exactly as it was. The calm cabin against the darker exterior is part of the appeal.

What the owner gets day to day

  • Stone chip protection on the highway, where a Ghost spends much of its time.
  • Scratch and swirl resistance in car parks and during washing.
  • Self-healing of light surface marks in the heat.
  • UV protection for the factory paint underneath.
  • Full reversibility: the original white paint can be revealed when the owner chooses.

Matte film is also simple to look after: no polishing and no wax. A safe hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo is all it needs. If you want to add easier cleaning on top, read about whether matte and satin cars can be ceramic coated.

How long does colour change PPF last in Dubai?

Good quality film, properly installed and maintained, typically lasts many years in the UAE. Life depends on how the car is stored, how often it is driven, and how it is washed. Our guide to how long PPF lasts in Dubai covers this in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Can you change a Rolls-Royce’s colour without painting it?

Yes. Colour change PPF changes the colour and finish completely while the factory paint stays untouched underneath.

Is colour change PPF better than a vinyl wrap?

For protection, yes. PPF is thicker, absorbs stone chips, resists UV and heals light scratches. Vinyl is mainly cosmetic.

Will the film damage the paint when it is removed?

Not on healthy factory paint, when removed correctly with gentle heat. See how we approach safe PPF removal.

Does matte PPF need special care?

It should never be polished or waxed. A gentle hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo keeps it looking even.

How much does colour change PPF cost on a Rolls-Royce?

It is quoted per car, because size, film choice and the extent of the badge work vary. WhatsApp +971 58 549 2739 with your model for a figure.
