Quick answer: Old PPF is safely removed by warming the film with controlled heat or steam, peeling it back slowly at a low angle, and cleaning off any adhesive left behind with a paint-safe remover. On healthy factory paint this normally leaves the paint unharmed. Old, sun-baked film in Dubai can break into small pieces and leave more adhesive, so it takes longer. Repainted panels and weak clear coat carry a real risk of paint lifting, which is why removal should be done by someone who checks the paint first.

Key facts
- Method: gentle heat or steam, a slow low-angle pull, then adhesive cleaned with a paint-safe remover.
- Old film: sun-baked film can crack and come away in pieces, which takes more time.
- Risk areas: repainted panels, poor previous repairs and failing clear coat can lift with the film.
- Avoid: razor blades on paint, hard scrapers, strong solvents and pulling cold film quickly.
- Price: removal depends on the car, the film’s age and condition, and is quoted after inspection.

PPF is designed to be removable, which is one of its biggest advantages over paint. But the way it comes off matters. Dubai’s heat and UV can bake old or low grade film onto the paint until it turns brittle, yellow and stubborn, and a rushed removal can leave glue everywhere or pull paint off with it.
Owners usually want film removed for one of four reasons: it has yellowed or started peeling, they bought a used car with poor film, a panel needs repair, or they want to change film type or finish. This guide explains how removal is done properly and what to expect.
When does PPF need to be removed?
PPF needs to be removed when it has failed, when the panel underneath needs repair, or when the owner wants a different film. Good quality film fitted properly can last many years, but no film lasts forever in UAE conditions.
- Yellowing or discolouration, more common on older or lower grade films.
- Peeling, lifting or cracking at edges and across panels.
- Bubbles or haze that do not settle with time.
- Heavy damage such as deep cuts from stones that no longer self-heal.
- Panel repair, because bodywork and paint cannot be done through film.
- A change of finish, for example from gloss to satin, or from film to colour PPF.
Our guides to PPF yellowing, peeling and lifting and how long PPF lasts in Dubai explain the warning signs.

How is PPF removed without damaging the paint?
PPF is removed without damaging the paint by softening the adhesive first, then releasing the film slowly. The aim is to let the adhesive let go of the paint, rather than forcing the film off.
- Inspect the paint. Check for repaints, previous repairs and weak clear coat before any film is lifted.
- Warm the film. Use controlled heat or steam so the film is pliable and the adhesive softens.
- Lift an edge. Start at a corner with a plastic tool or fingernail, never a blade on the paint.
- Pull low and slow. Peel the film back at a low angle, close to the surface, keeping it warm as you go.
- Remove adhesive. Clean residue with a paint-safe adhesive remover and soft microfibre cloths.
- Wash and inspect. Wash the car and check the paint under good lighting.
Heat must be controlled. Too little and the film tears or leaves most of its adhesive behind; too much can damage paint, plastic trim and rubber seals.
Why is old PPF harder to remove in Dubai?
Old PPF is harder to remove in Dubai because years of heat and UV can harden the top layer and change the adhesive. Instead of peeling off in one sheet, brittle film can crack into small pieces and leave a layer of glue on the paint.
| Film condition | What removal is like | Typical extra work |
|---|---|---|
| Recent, good quality film | Usually peels off cleanly in large sections | Light adhesive clean-up |
| Older film in fair condition | Peels with steady heat, some residue | Adhesive removal across most panels |
| Yellowed, brittle or cracked film | Comes away in small pieces | Slow removal and extensive adhesive cleaning |
| Film over a previous repaint | Risk of paint lifting with the film | Careful testing, possible paint repair |
This is why removal time and price vary so much from car to car, and why we quote after seeing the film.
Can PPF removal damage the paint?
PPF removal can damage the paint, but on healthy factory paint the risk is low when it is done carefully. The real risk is on paint that was already weak.
Panels that have been repainted, especially by a shop that skipped proper preparation, may not bond well to the layers below. Clear coat that is already failing from sun damage can also lift. In those cases the film can take paint with it. Our guides to clear coat failure and common paint defects explain why.
A good installer will tell you before starting if they see signs of a repaint or weak clear coat, so you can decide how to proceed.
Should I remove PPF myself?
We do not recommend removing PPF yourself unless the film is recent and the paint is original. Without the right heat control and patience, it is easy to tear the film, leave stubborn glue or scratch the paint while scraping it off.
Avoid razor blades on paint, hard plastic scrapers, household solvents and pressure washers aimed at edges. If you have bought a used car with poor film, our guide to PPF on used cars explains the inspection and preparation we do first.
How does Apex Detail Studio remove old PPF?
We remove film at our Al Quoz studio with the same care we use to install it, and we treat removal as preparation for whatever comes next.
- Inspection. We check the film type, its age and condition, and measure paint where repaints are suspected.
- Agree the scope. We explain which panels carry a risk and what the plan is if paint lifts.
- Controlled removal. Film is warmed and released panel by panel, edges and seams last.
- Adhesive clean-up. Residue is removed with paint-safe products and soft cloths.
- Paint check and correction. The paint is washed, inspected and polished where needed.
- Re-protection. New PPF, ceramic coating or nothing at all, as you prefer.
If you are replacing the film, our XPEL PPF guide and PPF warranty guide help you choose the next film, and the XPEL warranty information lists what the manufacturer covers.

Frequently asked questions
Can PPF be removed without damaging paint?
Yes, on healthy factory paint it usually comes off without harm when it is warmed and pulled slowly. The risk rises on repainted panels and on clear coat that is already failing.
How long does PPF removal take?
It depends on the car, how much film there is and its condition. Recent film can come off quickly, while yellowed or brittle film that breaks into pieces takes much longer. We confirm timing after inspection.
How much does PPF removal cost in Dubai?
Removal is priced on the car, the coverage and the film’s condition, because brittle film and heavy adhesive take more time. Apex Detail Studio quotes after inspection or from clear photos on WhatsApp.
Why does old PPF leave glue behind?
Heat and UV over time can change the adhesive and harden the film, so the adhesive stays on the paint when the film is lifted. It is cleaned off with a paint-safe adhesive remover.
Can I remove PPF with a heat gun at home?
It is possible on recent film, but easy to overheat paint or trim, tear the film or scratch the paint while scraping glue. We recommend professional removal, especially on older film.
Can new PPF go on straight after removal?
Usually yes, once adhesive is fully removed and the paint has been washed, inspected and corrected where needed. If paint repair is required, new film waits until the paint has cured.
