Full Colour Change Respray: What Owners Should Plan For

What a full colour change respray really involves, how far to go into jambs and openings, and how it compares with colour PPF or a wrap.

Share on WhatsApp 8 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

Quick answer: A full colour change respray is a major job, not a quick refresh. The car is partly dismantled, every outer panel is prepared and painted, and you decide how far to go into door shuts, boot and bonnet openings and the engine bay. The more areas included, the better the result looks with doors open, and the longer and more expensive the job. In the UAE you should also update the colour on the vehicle registration. If you want to keep the factory paint, colour PPF is a reversible alternative.

Key facts

  • Scope decides everything: exterior only, exterior plus jambs, or a full colour change including openings and engine bay.
  • Preparation: dismantling, sanding, bodywork and primer take more time than the actual painting.
  • Paint system: Apex refinishes with a professional PPG system, with spray-out tests to confirm the new colour.
  • Registration: a colour change should be updated with the traffic authority; confirm the current process before booking.
  • Alternative: colour PPF changes the look while protecting, and can be removed later.

A colour change is one of the biggest visual changes you can make to a car. Done well, it looks factory. Done badly, you see the old colour every time you open a door, plus masking lines, overspray on rubbers and orange peel in the sun.

The difference comes from planning. This guide covers what a full respray involves, the decisions you need to make before work starts, and how it compares with colour PPF or a wrap.

What does a full colour change respray include?

A proper colour change is a full refinish of the car in a new colour. In practice it involves:

  1. Inspecting the existing paint and bodywork, including previous repairs.
  2. Removing trim, lights, handles, badges and seals as needed.
  3. Repairing dents, chips and any corrosion.
  4. Sanding the existing paint and applying primer or sealer.
  5. Spraying the new basecoat colour and clearcoat.
  6. Curing, then flatting and polishing to the agreed finish.
  7. Refitting all parts and checking sensors, lights and panel gaps.

The painting itself is a small part of the time. Dismantling, preparation and reassembly decide how long the car is off the road.

How far should the new colour go?

This is the main decision. Areas you only see with a door or bonnet open still show the old colour unless they are painted too.

Scope What is painted What you will see
Exterior only Outside panels Old colour visible in door shuts, boot and bonnet openings
Exterior plus jambs Outside panels, door shuts and openings New colour with doors open; old colour under the bonnet
Full colour change Exterior, jambs, openings and engine bay where practical Closest to a factory finish in the new colour

Each step up adds dismantling, masking and time. We explain exactly which areas are included in the quote so there are no surprises when you open the doors.

How is the new colour chosen and checked?

Choosing a colour from a small chip indoors is risky. Colours look very different in Dubai’s strong sunlight, in shade and under street lights at night.

We spray test cards in the chosen colour using our professional PPG refinish system and check them outside in daylight before committing. This is also when you confirm the finish level: standard gloss, high-gloss or satin and matte, which need different clearcoats and aftercare.

Do I need to update my vehicle registration?

Yes. In the UAE the colour recorded on the registration should match the car. Requirements and approval steps can change, so confirm the current process with the traffic authority (in Dubai, the RTA) before the work starts, and keep your invoice from the workshop.

It is also worth telling your insurer, because a full respray affects the value of the car and the cost of any future repair.

Respray or colour PPF: which is better?

If you want to keep the factory paint, colour PPF is often the better route. It changes the colour and protects the original paint at the same time, and it can be removed later.

Full respray Colour PPF
Original paint Removed or covered permanently Kept underneath and protected
Reversible No Yes, the film can be removed
Protection from chips None on its own Yes, the film absorbs chips
Jambs and openings Can be fully painted Usually exterior only, some jambs possible
Resale Can affect value on some cars Factory colour preserved for resale

On a newer or valuable car, colour PPF is usually the safer choice. On an older car with tired or damaged paint, a respray fixes the paint and changes the colour in one job.

How does Apex Detail Studio handle a colour change?

  1. Consultation. We discuss colour, finish and scope, and whether respray or colour PPF suits the car.
  2. Inspection. Paint, bodywork and previous repairs are checked and documented.
  3. Colour confirmation. Test cards are sprayed and checked in daylight.
  4. Dismantling and preparation. Parts are removed and every panel is prepared and primed.
  5. Paint and cure. The PPG basecoat and clearcoat are applied and cured.
  6. Finish and refit. Panels are polished, parts refitted, and lights, sensors and gaps checked.

Once cured, the new paint can be protected with PPF or ceramic coating exactly like factory paint. Our guide to protecting fresh paint explains the timing.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a full colour change respray take?

It depends on the scope, the condition of the existing paint and how much dismantling is needed. An exterior-only respray is quicker than a full colour change including jambs and the engine bay. We confirm the timeline after inspection.

Should the door shuts be painted in a colour change?

If you want the car to look factory with the doors open, yes. Exterior-only resprays leave the old colour visible in the door shuts, boot and bonnet openings.

Do I need to tell the RTA about a colour change?

In the UAE the registered colour should match the car. Confirm the current process with the RTA or your emirate’s traffic authority before starting, and keep the workshop invoice.

Is colour PPF better than a respray?

For newer or valuable cars, colour PPF is often better because it keeps and protects the original paint and can be removed. A respray makes more sense on older cars where the paint needs repair anyway.

Can a respray be protected with PPF?

Yes, once the new paint has fully cured. We follow the paint system guidance on curing before fitting film or ceramic coating.

How do I get a colour change quote?

Send your make, model, year, current colour, target colour and photos on WhatsApp. We confirm the scope and price after inspecting the car.
