Most drivers never ask which paint a body shop uses. They notice the result instead: a bumper that looks slightly too yellow in the afternoon sun, a bonnet that is a shade lighter than the wing, or clearcoat that starts to haze after one Dubai summer.
Those problems usually come from the system behind the repair. A refinish is a stack of products (primer, sealer, colour, clearcoat, hardeners and reducers) that have to work together, plus the procedures that tell the painter how to mix, spray and cure each layer. What is an automotive refinish system?
An automotive refinish system is the matched set of products and procedures used to repaint a car after damage or wear. It covers everything from cleaners and primers to the colour basecoat, the clearcoat and the polishing stage.
The word system matters. Each layer is formulated to bond to the one beneath it and to cure at a known rate. When a shop mixes a primer from one brand, a basecoat from another and a cheap clear from a third, adhesion, gloss and long term durability become guesswork.

We use PPG because it gives our painters three things at once: compatible products for every layer, a deep colour database for modern OEM finishes, and clear technical procedures for each product.
PPG describes its Envirobase High Performance system as a waterborne basecoat designed for colour accuracy, durability and efficient application. Waterborne basecoats are now standard practice at serious refinish shops worldwide, and they handle the complex metallic and pearl colours found on modern German, Italian and British cars well.
Just as important, PPG publishes how its products should be used. Mixing ratios, flash times between coats, film build and curing are documented, so a repair can be done the same way every time rather than by feel.
How does PPG help with colour matching?
A paint code alone is rarely enough. A single factory colour can have several production variants, and the paint on a five-year-old car in Dubai has also aged in the sun. PPG provides colour formulas, variant information and digital tools to help technicians find the closest blendable match.
PPG’s own standard procedure for identifying a colour formula starts with the code, then checks variants against the actual car. In practice, our painters:
- Read the paint code and check the available variants for that colour.
- Compare variant chips against a polished, clean area of the car in daylight and under studio lighting.
- Spray a test card (a spray-out) and compare it at several angles before painting the panel.
- Plan blending into neighbouring panels where a metallic, pearl or tri-coat colour needs it.
Blending is not a shortcut. It is how a professional repair stops the eye from picking out a colour step at a panel gap, especially on silver, white pearl and dark metallic colours.
Does premium paint guarantee a perfect repair?
No. The paint is only as good as the work around it. Technician skill, bodywork, sanding, masking, spray technique, booth cleanliness, curing and final polishing decide whether the repair disappears or stands out.
That is why we treat PPG as one part of a controlled process rather than a selling point on its own. A cheap repair with expensive paint still fails if the filler is not flat or the clearcoat is sprayed too heavy.
Modern colours also change with viewing angle and light. A good finish has to be checked from several positions, in daylight and under studio lights, not judged from one photo.
How does Apex Detail Studio apply the PPG system?
Every paint job at our Al Quoz studio follows the same sequence, from inspection to handover.
- Inspection. We document the damage, measure paint depth where useful and check for previous repairs.
- Scope. We decide which panels need repair, which need blending and what must be dismantled.
- Bodywork and preparation. Dents and cracks are repaired, edges feathered and compatible primers applied.
- Colour. The PPG formula is selected and checked with a spray-out before the car is painted.
- Application and curing. Basecoat and clearcoat are applied following the product procedures and cured fully.
- Finishing and checks. The panel is polished where needed and checked for colour, texture, gloss, edges and overspray.

Can new PPG paint be protected with PPF or ceramic coating?
Yes, once it has cured. Fresh paint needs time to release solvents and harden before film or coating goes on top. The right waiting period depends on the products used and how the paint was cured, so we follow the paint shop’s technical guidance rather than a fixed number of days.
