Ceramic Coating Aftercare Mistakes That Cut Its Performance

The ceramic coating aftercare mistakes that do the most harm are getting the car wet while the coating cures, using automatic brush washes, adding wax or harsh cleaners, letting the car air dry and leaving bird droppings or sap to bake on. What reduces a ceramic coating’s performance?

A ceramic coating’s performance drops when it is disturbed while curing, scrubbed by brushes or abrasive towels, covered with wax or harsh chemicals, left to air dry, or left under bird droppings, sap and tar. Each of these either wears the coating away or buries its slick, water repelling surface.

Once fully cured, a coating is hydrophobic and largely self cleaning, so it needs very little rubbing to release dirt. That is the whole point of it. Most aftercare mistakes come from treating a coated car like uncoated paint: scrubbing harder, adding products on top, or using the nearest automatic wash. A coated car needs less effort, not more.

What mistakes do people make while a ceramic coating is curing?

The biggest curing mistakes are letting water touch the car, parking it outdoors, leaving contaminants on it, and touching or treating the paint. During curing the coating is still soft and easily marked, so the first days matter more than any other period.

• Water. Keep the car away from rain, garden sprinklers and washing until we tell you it is safe.
• Parking outside. Sun, bird droppings and tree sap can all contaminate a coating that has not hardened yet. A garage or covered parking is best.
• Leaving contamination. If a bird dropping, pollen or sap lands on the car, remove it gently straight away.
• Touching the paint. Do not rub, polish or apply any chemical to the paint while it cures.

Temperature and humidity affect curing too, which is why we cure coated cars in controlled conditions before handover and give you the exact waiting period for the first wash.

Why is an automatic car wash a mistake on a coated car?

Automatic brush car washes are a mistake because their brushes scratch the coating and their chemicals are often harsh enough to wear it down. Over months, they undo much of what the coating was applied to do.

The brushes in a drive through wash have cleaned hundreds of cars before yours and carry that grit with them. On a coated car they leave swirl marks in the coating itself, and the strong detergents used to clean quickly strip its hydrophobic layer. The car may look clean, but water stops beading and dirt starts sticking again.

Safe alternatives exist. At home, apply shampoo with a foam gun or microfibre mitt, rinse with a pressure washer or hose and dry with a soft microfibre towel. At a self service spray bay, use the high pressure soap and rinse, then dry with your own microfibre. If you use a professional wash, choose a touchless one and never a brush wash. Which products should you never use on a ceramic coating?

Never use household cleansers, abrasive polishes, cutting compounds or aggressive degreasers on a ceramic coating, and do not put wax or a sealant on top of it. Use a pH neutral car shampoo for washing and a coating compatible booster if you want to top it up.

Polishes and compounds are abrasive by design, so they remove coating along with whatever you are trying to polish out. Harsh cleaners and washing up liquid chemically strip it. Wax and sealants are a different kind of mistake: they do not damage the coating, but they cover it. Wax sits on top of the slick ceramic surface, so you lose the coating’s water beading and self cleaning behaviour and get the shorter lived properties of the wax instead.

The coating already provides the protection, so there is nothing to gain by layering a wax over it. If the surface feels less slick than it did, the fix is a decontamination wash and a booster, not a wax.

What drying mistakes leave marks on a coated car?

The drying mistakes that leave marks are air drying, using a chamois or rough towel, and rubbing hard. Dry with a damp microfibre towel to take off most of the water, then a second dry microfibre towel to finish, wiping gently.

Air drying is the worst of these in Dubai. Our water carries a lot of minerals, and when it evaporates on the paint it leaves those minerals behind as spots that can etch. A thick, soft microfibre towel, around 350 GSM, absorbs well and glides over the surface without dragging grit.

Turn the towel often, let it do the work rather than pressing down, and keep drying towels only for paintwork. Wash them separately without fabric softener so they stay soft and absorbent.

Why is leaving bird droppings, sap and tar on the paint a mistake?

Leaving bird droppings, tree sap and tar on a coated car is a mistake because they harden and stain, and in Dubai heat they start attacking the surface within hours. Remove them as soon as you see them.

Use a soft microfibre towel and a pH neutral cleaning solution. Soften the mark, give it a moment, then lift it away gently. Do not scrub or reach for a polish, because aggressive rubbing does more damage to the coating than the contaminant would have. Tar may need a dedicated, coating safe tar remover rather than more pressure.

The coating buys you time, since the contamination sits on the coating rather than biting into the clear coat. But it only buys time. Left for days, these contaminants degrade the coating and can go through to the paint.

Is washing a coated car in direct sun a mistake?

Yes. Washing in direct sun is a mistake because shampoo and water dry on the hot panel before you can rinse or wipe them, leaving streaks and water spots. Wash in shade, early in the morning or after sunset.

Paint in the Dubai sun gets much hotter than the air around it. On a panel that hot, rinse water evaporates in seconds and leaves its minerals behind, exactly what the coating is supposed to help you avoid. Moving the car into shade or a garage, or simply washing at a cooler time of day, solves the problem completely.

Does the interior need care alongside an exterior ceramic coating?

Yes. An exterior ceramic coating protects the paint, but the cabin still needs its own care: clean leather and vinyl regularly with a proper leather care product, and vacuum carpets and upholstery often. We also offer leather and fabric protection to complement the coating.

Dubai sun and dust are as hard on interiors as on paint. Leather dries out and fine sand works into seat surfaces and carpets, where it acts like sandpaper every time someone gets in. A regular wipe with a leather product replenishes the leather’s natural oils and stops build up, and a protection treatment makes spills and dirt easier to remove.

How can you tell aftercare mistakes have weakened your coating?

The clearest signs are water that sheets slowly or sits flat instead of forming tight beads, a car that gets dirty faster than it used to, a finish that feels grabby rather than slick, and fine swirls appearing under strong light. Any of these means the coating is buried or worn.

The good news is that a lot of lost performance is recoverable. If the coating is simply covered in bonded iron, minerals or a layer of wax, a proper decontamination wash removes it and a booster restores the top layer. If brushes or polishing have worn areas through, those panels can be corrected and re-coated without redoing the whole car.

Can rain damage a new ceramic coating?

Yes, while it is still curing. Keep the car dry until we confirm the curing period is over; after that, rain is not a problem, though it is worth rinsing the dust it leaves.

Will a touchless car wash harm my ceramic coating?

Why has my ceramic coating stopped beading water?
