What is paint protection film?
Paint protection film is a thin, transparent layer of thermoplastic urethane that is bonded to a car’s painted panels to take the damage instead of the paint. It is nearly invisible once fitted, and the original colour and gloss show straight through it.
The idea started outside the car world. Urethane film was first used to protect helicopter rotor blades from debris, and the same principle carried over to cars: a tough, flexible layer that absorbs impacts so the surface underneath stays intact. Older owners in Dubai sometimes remember bulky leather car bras on the front of a car. Modern PPF does the same job without changing how the car looks.
Good film has three parts that matter to an owner: a clear urethane body that absorbs impact, an adhesive that holds firmly but can be removed by a professional without harming factory paint, and a topcoat that resists staining and can heal light scratches with heat.
What does PPF protect your car from in Dubai?
PPF protects paint from the damage Dubai roads deal out every day: stone chips on the highway, sand blasting, light scratches, bird droppings, tree sap and long hours of sun. The film takes the hit, and the paint underneath stays factory fresh.
Here is what the film is designed to handle:
- Stone chips and road debris. Gravel kicked up on Sheikh Zayed Road or the Al Ain road hits the bonnet, bumper and mirrors at speed. The urethane absorbs the impact.
- Sand and abrasion. Wind-blown sand and careless washing leave fine scratches. On film, many of these marks heal when warmed.
- UV and heat. Summer temperatures above 45C and strong UV can fade and dull paint over time. The film adds a protective layer that helps keep the original colour and shine.
- Stains and chemical etching. Bird droppings and sap baked in the sun can etch clear coat. The film’s topcoat resists staining.
- Door dings and parking scuffs. Door edges, door cups and loading areas take daily wear that film can absorb.
What PPF does not do is make a car indestructible. A heavy impact or a collision will still damage the panel. The film is there for everyday wear, which is what spoils most paint in this city.

How does self-healing PPF work?
Self-healing PPF has an elastic topcoat that flows back into shape when it is warmed, so light scratches and swirl marks fade on their own. In Dubai the sun usually does the work, and warm water or a heat gun speeds it up.
This matters because most visible paint damage is shallow. Wash marring, light key scratches and the fine lines left by a dusty cloth sit in the top layer. On bare paint they need machine polishing to remove, which takes away clear coat each time. On self-healing film they disappear without touching the paint at all.
Self-healing has limits. A deep gouge that cuts through the film will not heal, and the panel will need that section of film replaced. The good news is that replacing a piece of film is far simpler than repainting a panel.
Which types of paint protection film can you choose?
The main choice is the finish: gloss film keeps or adds a deep shine, satin or matte film turns gloss paint into a soft satin look, and colour PPF changes the colour while still protecting the paint. Coverage is the second choice, from the front end only to the full body.
At Apex we fit XPEL films. XPEL Ultimate Plus is the gloss option most owners choose, and XPEL Stealth is the satin option for owners who want a matte look or already have factory matte paint. We break down every finish and coverage level in our guide to the types of PPF, so here we keep it short.
| Finish | Look | Typical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Gloss PPF | Keeps factory shine, adds depth | Most cars, new cars, dark colours |
| Satin or matte PPF | Soft, low-reflection finish | Factory matte paint, owners wanting a stealth look |
| Colour PPF | New colour with film protection | Owners who want a colour change without paint |
How is PPF installed at Apex Detail Studio?
A proper install starts with a full decontamination wash and paint inspection, then any polishing the paint needs, then precut film from DAP software laid in a controlled bay and tucked around the edges. No blade touches the paint.
Our process looks like this:
- Inspection and wash. We wash and decontaminate the car and check the paint under light. Any defect left under film stays sealed under film, so this step matters.
- Paint correction where needed. If the paint has swirls or marks, we polish them out first and explain the extra work before we start.
- Precut patterns. We use XPEL’s DAP precut software to plot each piece for the exact car, so the film is cut on the plotter rather than with a knife on the panel.
- Installation in controlled bays. Our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz has controlled installation bays that keep dust and heat in check while the film goes on.
- Edges and finishing. Edges are wrapped and tucked where the panel allows, so the film is hard to spot and less likely to lift.
- Final check. We inspect every panel before handover and walk you through aftercare.

Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
PPF and ceramic coating do different jobs: PPF is a physical layer that absorbs chips and scratches, while ceramic coating is a thin chemical layer that adds gloss and makes washing easier but cannot stop a stone chip. For impact protection, PPF wins.
| Question | PPF | Ceramic coating |
|---|---|---|
| Stops stone chips? | Yes, absorbs impacts | No |
| Heals light scratches? | Yes, with heat | No |
| Water beading and easy washing? | Some films, yes | Yes, its main strength |
| Can change the finish? | Yes, satin or colour film | No |
Many of our clients choose both. The film goes on first, and a coating over the film adds water beading and easier cleaning, which helps in a city where cars collect dust within a day. If you are deciding between the two, our PPF vs ceramic coating comparison sets out which suits which owner and budget.

How much does paint protection film cost in Dubai?
At Apex, full-body PPF starts from AED 12,000 for sedans and AED 13,500 for SUVs and trucks (colour PPF from AED 15,000), depending on options, before 5% VAT. The final figure depends on the size of the car, the film you choose, the coverage and how much paint preparation the car needs.
A larger SUV needs more film and more hours than a compact coupe. A satin finish or colour film is a different product from standard gloss film. Front-end coverage costs less than a full wrap. Paint that needs correction before film adds time. We cover each of these in our guide to PPF cost in Dubai.
The value case is simple: film is far cheaper than repainting chipped panels, and original paint matters when a car is sold. Send your car details on WhatsApp and we will give you an exact quote.
How do you look after a car with PPF?
Wash a filmed car every week or two with a pH-neutral shampoo, keep pressure-washer jets away from film edges, and remove bird droppings quickly. Wait about seven days after installation before the first wash so the film can settle.
Avoid harsh degreasers and abrasive polishes on the film. Automatic brush washes are best avoided. The film carries a manufacturer warranty, and our team explains the terms and the care that keeps it valid at handover. Our paint protection film service page lists everything included with an Apex install.

Frequently asked questions
Is paint protection film visible on a car?
Good gloss film is nearly invisible. With precut patterns and tucked edges, most people cannot tell a car is filmed unless they look closely at the panel edges.
Can PPF be removed without damaging the paint?
Yes. When removed by a trained installer, quality film comes off without harming factory paint, provided the paint was sound when the film went on.
Does PPF protect against sun damage in Dubai?
Yes. The film adds a UV-resistant layer over the paint that helps prevent fading and dulling from strong sun and heat above 45C.
Can you put PPF on an older car?
Yes. We inspect and correct the paint first, then fit the film, so the car is protected and looks refreshed.
Do I need PPF on the whole car?
Not always. Front-end coverage protects the areas that take the most chips. Full-body PPF protects every painted panel and keeps the finish uniform.
Can ceramic coating go on top of PPF?
Yes. A coating over the film adds water beading and makes washing easier. The film goes on first.
Which PPF brand does Apex use?
We are XPEL accredited and fit XPEL films, including Ultimate Plus for gloss and Stealth for satin.
