The PPF installation process has four stages: inspect and prepare the paint, cut the film from precut patterns, apply it panel by panel with edges wrapped, then inspect every edge before handover. At Apex Detail Studio in Al Quoz, Dubai, our XPEL accredited team follows this process on every car. Full-body PPF starts from AED 12,000 for sedans and AED 13,500 for SUVs and trucks (colour PPF from AED 15,000), depending on options, before 5% VAT.

What does a proper PPF installation process look like?

A proper PPF installation follows a fixed order: consultation and paint inspection, a full wash and decontamination, paint correction where needed, cutting the film from computer-designed patterns, applying and stretching it panel by panel, wrapping and sealing the edges, and a final inspection under good light.

Every stage exists for a reason. Film is clear, so it shows everything underneath it. If the paint is dirty or swirled, the film seals that in. If the film is cut badly, edges sit in the wrong place and lift. If it is overstretched, it can distort and age faster. A good installation is the sum of many small, careful steps rather than one clever trick.

At Apex Detail Studio, the work is done by our in-house, XPEL accredited team in controlled installation bays inside our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz. The sections below go through each stage in the order we do it.

How is the car inspected and prepared before PPF?

Preparation starts with a consultation and paint inspection, then a thorough wash, chemical and clay decontamination, and polishing or paint correction to remove swirls and light scratches. Finally, every panel is wiped clean so the adhesive bonds to bare, clean paint.

In the consultation we talk through how you use the car, the paint finish and the look you want, and agree the film and coverage. We then inspect the paint for chips, previous repairs and swirls, because these affect how the film will look and how it will bond.

The wash removes loose dirt. Decontamination goes further: iron fallout remover and clay take out bonded contaminants that a wash leaves behind, which would otherwise show as tiny bumps under the film. Then comes polishing. Light swirls and scratches are corrected so the film locks in a clean, glossy finish. We also clean gaps, edges and panel seams, where hidden dust causes most of the specks you see in poor installations. Only once the paint is clean and dry does any film come near the car.

How is PPF cut: precut patterns or hand trimming?

We cut film from precut patterns. XPEL’s DAP software holds patterns designed for the specific make and model, and a plotter cuts each piece, so no blade is used on the paint and there is no manual trimming on the car.

The alternative, called bulk installation, lays a large sheet of film over a panel and trims it in place with a knife. In skilled hands it can work, but every cut made on the car is a risk to the paint underneath. Knife marks in the clear coat are one of the most common problems we see when we remove other installers’ film.

Precut patterns also give consistent results. Edges, cut lines around sensors and badges, and the amount of film left for wrapping are the same every time. Patterns can be adjusted before cutting to extend coverage or add wrapped edges where the panel design allows. Our article on DAP precut PPF explains the software in more detail.

How is the film applied to each panel?

Each piece is sprayed with a slip solution, positioned on the panel, then anchored and squeegeed outward to push the solution and air out. Heat is used to soften the film so it follows curves without creases, and the edges are wrapped around the panel where possible.

Slip solution lets the installer float the film into exactly the right position. Once it is aligned, a tack solution or an anchor point holds it while the squeegee works from the centre to the edges. On complex shapes, such as deep bumper intakes or sculpted fenders, careful heat lets the film stretch just enough to follow the contour. Too much stretch thins the film and can cause it to pull back later, so this stage is about control rather than force.

Fine details take the most time. On a full-body XPEL installation on a Rolls-Royce Ghost, our team protected around the Spirit of Ecstasy emblem and the chrome accents, which needs patient, precise work so the film lines are invisible. Badges and trim generally stay on the car, because the patterns are designed around them.

What happens after the film is on the car?

After application, every edge, seam and corner is inspected under strong light, any remaining moisture or small bubbles are worked out with heat, and the car is cleaned and handed back with care instructions. The film then settles over the following days.

The final inspection is where good installers separate themselves. We check that edges are sealed, wrapped edges are tucked fully, there is no lifting at corners and no dust under the film. Small pockets of moisture can remain for a short time after installation and usually disappear as the film cures, especially in Dubai’s warmth.

Before handover we explain how to wash the car, which products to avoid and how long to wait before the first wash. We also talk through the manufacturer warranty on the film, and owners can bring the car back for inspections and cleaning. Teaching owners how to look after the film is part of the job, because care decides how good it looks years later.

What does a bad PPF installation look like?

A bad PPF installation shows as lifting or peeling edges, bubbles and dust specks under the film, visible stretch marks, misaligned cut lines, and knife marks in the paint. Many of these appear weeks later, once the film settles in Dubai heat.

Common causes are skipped preparation, rushed work in a dusty space, overstretching, and trimming film on the car with a blade. Cheap film adds its own problems, such as early yellowing and adhesive that leaves residue when it is removed. We regularly fix other installers’ work. Our Ferrari Portofino PPF replacement and the bad PPF job we fixed show what failed and how it was put right.

If you are comparing studios, ask how they prepare the paint, whether they cut from precut patterns, how they handle edges, and whether the work is done in a clean, controlled bay. Our guide to choosing the best PPF installer in Dubai has a full checklist.

Does the film you choose change how PPF is installed?

The method stays the same, but each film behaves slightly differently. Gloss film such as XPEL Ultimate Plus has to be perfectly clear over the paint, while satin film such as XPEL Stealth changes the finish, so every panel must be covered evenly or the difference shows.

We use XPEL films only. Ultimate Plus is a high-gloss, self-healing film; we have fitted it full body on a Ferrari 812 Superfast. Stealth gives a satin look on gloss paint and protects factory matte and satin paint without adding shine; we fitted satin Stealth on a Tesla Model X. With satin film, coverage choices matter more, because a panel without film will look glossier than its neighbours.

Coverage also changes the job. A BMW 7 Series we protected for daily driving had the high-impact areas covered, while a Lamborghini Urus was fitted for protection against sand and staining. Whatever the film, the stages above do not change. See our paint protection film service page for coverage options.

How much does professional PPF installation cost in Dubai?

Full-body PPF at Apex Detail Studio starts from AED 12,000 for sedans and AED 13,500 for SUVs and trucks (colour PPF from AED 15,000), depending on options, before 5% VAT. The final figure depends on the size and shape of the car, the film you choose and the coverage.

Installation time is a big part of the cost. A car with complex bumpers, vents and badges takes longer than a simple shape, and paint that needs more correction adds preparation time. Partial packages for the high-impact areas are also available. Frequently asked questions

How long does a full-body PPF installation take?

It depends on the car, the paint condition and the coverage. We confirm the timing when you book, because rushing any stage shortens the life of the film.

Do badges have to be removed for PPF?

Usually not. Precut patterns are designed around badges, emblems and sensors, so they generally stay on the car.

Is paint correction needed before PPF?

In most cases, yes. Film seals in whatever is underneath, so swirls and light scratches should be corrected first.

Why are there small bubbles after PPF installation?

Small moisture pockets can remain for a short time and usually disappear as the film cures. Dust specks or large bubbles that stay are a sign of poor installation.

Is precut PPF better than bulk installation?

Precut avoids knife cuts on the paint and gives consistent results. Bulk can cover more on some panels but relies on trimming on the car.

Can PPF be installed on a car with paint chips?

Yes, but the chips will still be visible under the film. We can advise on touching them up before installation.

Why does a controlled installation bay matter for PPF?

Dust and wind are the enemies of a clean install. A clean, enclosed bay keeps particles out from under the film, which matters even more in a sandy city like Dubai.
