This PPF FAQ answers the questions Dubai owners ask us most. Paint protection film, also called clear bra, is a clear, self-healing urethane film that protects paint from chips, scratches, stains and UV. What is paint protection film (PPF)?

Paint protection film is a transparent, durable film made from thermoplastic urethane that is applied to a car’s painted surfaces. It protects against stone chips, scratches, stains and minor abrasions while staying nearly invisible.

You will also hear it called clear bra, a name from the days when it only covered the front of the car. Modern film is very different. It has a self-healing topcoat, so light scratches and swirl marks fade with heat from the sun, warm water or a heat gun. It is flexible enough to wrap around curves and edges, and it is UV stable, so it shields the paint from fading.

Think of it as a sacrificial layer. The film takes the damage that would otherwise hit your clear coat, and the paint underneath stays as it left the factory. How long does PPF last in Dubai?

How long PPF lasts depends on three things: the quality of the film, the quality of the installation and how the car is looked after. Premium film fitted properly and washed gently lasts many years, even in Dubai heat.

Budget films without good UV stabilisers are the ones that yellow, crack or peel early, and poor installation shortens the life of any film through lifted edges, overstretching and trapped dirt. Care matters too: harsh chemicals, brush washes and contaminants left to bake in the sun all wear the topcoat faster.

Premium films such as XPEL carry a manufacturer warranty, and our team explains the terms for the film you choose when you book. In practice, the owners who get the longest life from their film are the ones who wash it gently, keep it clean and bring the car in if an edge lifts.

Dubai adds its own pressures. Summer heat above 45C, strong UV all year, humidity near the coast and fine sand are harder on film than a mild climate. Parking in shade, washing regularly and choosing a premium film with strong UV protection all help the film age well here.

Can PPF be removed without damaging the paint?

Yes. On healthy factory paint, quality PPF can be removed without damaging the paint underneath. Removal should be done by a professional, using heat and the right technique so the adhesive releases cleanly and no residue or paint is pulled away.

Problems usually come from two places: cheap films whose adhesive breaks down and leaves residue, and paint that was already weak, such as a poor respray. That is why we always check a car’s paint before fitting film and why we only use genuine XPEL. When film reaches the end of its life, or a panel is damaged, the old film comes off, the paint is cleaned and corrected if needed, and new film goes on. With precut patterns a single panel can be replaced without redoing the whole car.

Please do not try to peel old film yourself on a hot day with a fingernail and a razor blade. It is the most common way we see clear coat damaged during removal.

How is PPF applied to a car?

PPF is applied in four stages: the paint is washed, decontaminated and corrected; the film is cut from computer-designed patterns for that exact model; the film is positioned and squeegeed onto each panel; and remaining moisture and small bubbles are worked out with heat and a final inspection.

Preparation is the most important stage, because the film seals in whatever is underneath it. Any dust, swirls or contamination will show. At Apex we cut patterns with XPEL DAP precut software, so nobody runs a blade across your paint, and we wrap edges around panels where the design allows so the film line is hidden. The work is done in controlled installation bays in our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz by our in-house, XPEL accredited team. What types of PPF are there?

The main types are gloss PPF, which keeps a factory shine; matte or satin PPF, which gives a soft matte finish with the same protection; and coloured PPF, which changes the colour of the car while protecting it. Modern premium films in all three are self-healing.

How much does PPF cost in Dubai?

A large SUV uses more film than a compact coupe, satin and coloured films are priced differently from gloss, and complex bodywork takes more installation time. Is PPF worth the investment?

For most owners, yes. PPF costs more upfront than other protection, but it prevents chips and scratches that would otherwise need paint repair, keeps the car in original paint and helps protect resale value.

It is most worthwhile on new cars, cars driven on highways every day, and cars with paint that is expensive or difficult to match. In Dubai it also handles UV, heat and sand better than wax or sealants, which do not stop impacts. If the car is a short-term lease or will be sold within months, a front-end package may be the better value. It also helps to compare it with the alternative. Without film, a car that does regular highway driving in Dubai will usually need its front bumper and bonnet touched up or resprayed at some point, and a resprayed panel rarely matches the original perfectly, and buyers of premium cars often check paint depth readings to find resprays. With film, the damage lands on a layer that can be replaced panel by panel. Owners also tell us they simply enjoy the car more when they are not worrying about every truck on the road or every stranger washing it.

How do you maintain PPF?

Wash the car regularly by hand with a pH-neutral shampoo, use PPF-safe products and clean microfibre towels, avoid harsh chemicals and brush washes, and inspect the film from time to time. Waxing is not required.

If you want extra gloss and water beading, use a sealant that is safe on film or a ceramic coating designed for PPF. Remove bird droppings and tree sap quickly, because Dubai heat bakes them on. Frequently asked questions

Does PPF turn yellow?

Premium film with good UV stabilisers resists yellowing. Budget films, poor care and harsh chemicals are the usual causes when it happens.

Can you see PPF on a car?

Quality gloss film, well installed with wrapped edges, is very hard to spot. Satin film is visible because it changes the finish on purpose.

Can PPF go on matte paint?

Yes. A matte or satin film protects factory matte paint without adding shine.

Is PPF better than ceramic coating?

They do different jobs. PPF stops chips and scratches, while ceramic coating adds gloss and makes cleaning easier. Many owners combine both.

Can PPF be applied to headlights?

Yes. Clear film on headlights protects them from stone chips and pitting, and it is often included in front-end packages.
