PPF vs ceramic coating in Dubai comes down to one question: do you need to stop stone chips? Paint protection film is a physical polyurethane layer that absorbs chips and scratches. Ceramic coating is a hardened liquid layer that adds gloss and makes washing easier, but cannot stop impacts. At Apex Detail Studio in Al Quoz, full-body PPF starts from AED 12,000 for sedans and AED 13,500 for SUVs and trucks (colour PPF from AED 15,000), depending on options, before 5% VAT.

  • What it is: a comparison of paint protection film (a physical film) and ceramic coating (a hardened liquid layer).
  • What PPF does: absorbs stone chips and scratches, self-heals light marks with heat, can change the finish to satin, matte or colour.
  • What ceramic does: adds deep gloss, UV and chemical resistance, and makes sand and water slide off; it does not stop chips.
  • Best for: PPF for highway driving and expensive paint; ceramic for gloss and easy washing; both for the best result.
  • Cost: full-body PPF from AED 12,000 for sedans and AED 13,500 for SUVs and trucks (colour PPF from AED 15,000), depending on options, before 5% VAT; ceramic coating quoted per car on WhatsApp.

What is the difference between PPF and ceramic coating?

Paint protection film is a thick, transparent polyurethane film that physically takes the hit from stone chips and scratches. Ceramic coating is a liquid silica layer that hardens on the paint to add gloss, UV resistance and easy cleaning, but it is far too thin to stop a stone.

The easiest way to think about it: PPF is armour, ceramic is a slick, glossy skin. The film sits on the paint as a sacrificial layer, so when gravel hits the bonnet at highway speed the film absorbs the impact and the clear coat underneath stays intact. Quality films also self-heal: light swirls and fine scratches in the top layer level out with heat.

A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat (or to the film) and changes how the surface behaves. Water beads, sand and dust release more easily, bird droppings and bug splatter are less likely to etch, and dark colours gain depth. What it cannot do is absorb a stone chip. It resists light marring only.

Both are good products. They simply solve different problems, which is why the right answer depends on how and where you drive.

How do PPF and ceramic coating compare side by side?

PPF wins on physical protection and finish options; ceramic wins on gloss and ease of washing. On UV and chemical resistance they are close.

Feature PPF Ceramic coating
Stone chip protection Yes No
Scratch protection Yes, light marks self-heal with heat Light marring only
Gloss High gloss, satin or matte Deep, glassy gloss
UV and chemical resistance Yes Yes
Easy cleaning Good Excellent
Can change colour or finish Yes No
Removal Can be removed without damaging the paint Wears down gradually over time
Cost Higher Lower

The removability point matters more than people expect. When a car is sold, the film can come off and the original paint underneath looks the way it did on the day the film went on. A coating cannot do that, because it never stopped the chips in the first place.

Why does Dubai driving change the PPF vs ceramic decision?

In Dubai the main threat to paint is stone chips, because highways and construction traffic throw gravel every day. That makes PPF the stronger choice for most cars that see regular motorway use, with ceramic coating as the gloss and cleaning layer.

Summer heat regularly passes 45C, UV is intense for most of the year, and fine sand settles on every horizontal panel. Those conditions affect both products differently:

  • Gravel and debris: only film stops chips on the bonnet, bumper, mirrors and headlights. Repainting a chipped panel is costly and a repaint can affect resale value.
  • Heat: the sun actually helps PPF, because heat is what triggers the self-healing of light swirls in the film.
  • Sand and dust: a ceramic surface lets dust rinse away more easily, so washes are faster and cause fewer swirls.
  • Hard water and bird droppings: in the heat these etch quickly; a coating makes them less likely to bond.

So the climate does not favour one product outright. It rewards using each for what it does best.

Which should you choose for your car and driving style?

Choose PPF if you drive the highway often or the paint is expensive to repair, ceramic if you mainly want gloss and easier washing, and both if you want the best result. Here is how we usually match protection to owners:

Your situation What we recommend
New car you plan to keep for years Full PPF plus ceramic
Supercar, sports car or luxury SUV Full PPF plus ceramic
Long daily highway commute PPF, at least on the front end
Want a new colour or a matte look Colour-change or matte PPF
Leased car to return in good condition PPF on high-impact areas
Daily city driver who wants gloss Ceramic coating
Older car with swirl marks Paint correction plus ceramic coating

Can you put ceramic coating on top of PPF?

Yes. A ceramic coating applied over paint protection film adds gloss, makes the film easier to wash and protects the film’s surface from contamination, while the film underneath stops chips and scratches.

This is the combination we recommend most for cars that will be kept for years. The film does the heavy lifting against gravel, the coating keeps the surface slick so sand and water rinse off, and neither product has to do a job it was not designed for. On satin and matte films a coating suited to that finish keeps the look even rather than adding shine.

We cover the order of work, the finish options and aftercare in detail in our article on combining PPF and ceramic coating.

How do you look after PPF and ceramic coating in Dubai?

Both products last longest with gentle hand washing, a pH-neutral shampoo and clean microfibre towels. Avoid automatic brush washes and harsh degreasers, which wear the film’s top layer and dull a coating faster.

Care is where the two products feel most different day to day. A ceramic surface is the easier of the two to keep clean: dust from the desert wind rinses away, and water beads and runs off instead of sitting and drying into spots in the heat. Film is also easy to wash, but it benefits from an eye on its edges. High-pressure water should be kept away from film edges, and anything that looks lifted should be checked by the installer rather than picked at.

In practice, we suggest washing every week or two in summer, because sand and hard water marks build quickly when cars are parked outside. Bird droppings should come off the same day on any car, protected or not. If you add a coating over the film, you get the easiest washing of all, because the slick surface sits on top of the chip protection.

  • Rinse sand off first before touching the paint with a mitt.
  • Wash in the shade or in the early morning, not on a hot panel.
  • Dry with a soft towel or air blower to avoid water spots.

How does Apex Detail Studio apply PPF and ceramic coating?

We do all of the work indoors in our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz, in controlled installation bays away from dust and heat, using an in-house team. The process runs in five steps.

  1. Inspection: we look at the car under studio lights and talk through how you drive it, so the protection matches your habits.
  2. Preparation: a full wash and decontamination, with paint correction where the paint needs it. Anything left on the paint ends up sealed under the film or coating, so this step matters.
  3. PPF installation: film goes on panel by panel from DAP precut patterns, with edges wrapped where possible for a near-invisible finish.
  4. Ceramic coating: applied by hand on paint or film, then cured in controlled conditions.
  5. Handover: we walk you round the car and explain aftercare for whichever products you chose.

We are XPEL and Gtechniq accredited, so the film and coating are installed to the manufacturers’ standards and carry their manufacturer warranties, which the team explains at handover.

Which costs more in Dubai, PPF or ceramic coating?

PPF costs more than ceramic coating because of the film itself and the hours of skilled installation. Full-body PPF at Apex starts from AED 12,000 for sedans and AED 13,500 for SUVs and trucks (colour PPF from AED 15,000), depending on options, before 5% VAT.

For ceramic coating, pricing depends on the car and the package; send your car details on WhatsApp for an exact quote. The main things that move the price for either service are the size of the car, how much paint correction is needed first, and the coverage you choose. A front-end PPF package costs less than full body and protects the areas that take the most chips: bonnet, bumper, mirrors and headlights.

Frequently asked questions

Is PPF better than ceramic coating?

PPF is better at physical protection because it stops stone chips and scratches. Ceramic coating is better for gloss and easy washing. For a car you plan to keep, combining them gives the best result.

Does ceramic coating stop stone chips?

No. A ceramic coating is a thin hardened layer that resists light marring only. To stop chips from gravel you need paint protection film.

Can PPF be applied to only the front of the car?

Yes. Front-end PPF covers the bonnet, bumper, mirrors and headlights, which take most of the chips. It is a common choice for commuters and leased cars.

Does PPF turn yellow in Dubai?

Modern quality films are built to resist yellowing, and the film we fit carries a manufacturer warranty. Our team explains the terms at handover.

Is PPF worth it in Dubai?

For cars that do regular highway driving, yes. Gravel chips are the main paint threat here, and film prevents the damage rather than repairing it. Removing the film at resale reveals the original paint.

Can I wash a car with both PPF and ceramic coating normally?

Yes, and it is easier than washing bare paint. Use a pH-neutral shampoo, a soft mitt and microfibre towels, and avoid automatic brush washes.
