Choosing PPF or ceramic coating for a new car is easiest before the first highway drive. Paint protection film physically stops stone chips and scratches; ceramic coating adds gloss and easier washing but cannot stop impacts. Should a new car get PPF or ceramic coating?

If the new car will see Dubai highways or you plan to keep it for years, choose PPF, ideally with ceramic coating on top. If it will mostly do short city trips or live in a garage and your priority is gloss and easy washing, ceramic coating alone can be enough.

The reason timing matters is simple: a new car’s paint is in the best condition it will ever be. Film locks that condition in, because the paint underneath never sees a stone. A coating makes the paint easier to keep clean, but chips that land on a coated car are still chips in the paint. Once the first ones appear on the bonnet, the only fixes are touch-up or repaint, and neither is as good as the factory finish.

What does PPF do for a new car’s paint?

PPF is a clear thermoplastic urethane film that sits on the paint and takes the damage instead of it: rock chips, scratches and other physical marks. Many films, including the XPEL film we fit, self-heal light scratches with heat.

The technology began as a protective film for helicopter rotor blades before it was adapted for cars, which says a lot about what it is built to absorb. On a road car it does several jobs:

• Blocks the stone chips that pepper bonnets, bumpers and mirrors on fast roads.
• Resists scratches from bags, keys and careless car park neighbours.
• Blocks UV, which helps prevent oxidation and fading.
• Adds a showroom-like gloss on gloss film, or a new finish on satin and colour films.

The one visual trade-off is that film can show a slight edge where it ends. On a new car we reduce this by using DAP precut patterns and wrapping edges where the panel allows, so the film is close to invisible at normal viewing distance.

What does ceramic coating do for a new car?

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to the factory paint and forms a hard, hydrophobic layer. It adds deep gloss, blocks UV, and helps the paint resist bird droppings, tree sap and acid rain.

On a new car, a coating’s biggest everyday benefit is how easy it makes washing. Water beads and runs off, so water spots are less likely, and dirt struggles to cling, so you can wash less often and with less contact. There are no visible edges, because the coating covers every panel evenly.

What a coating cannot do is take an impact. It is far thinner than film. A stone that would bounce off PPF goes straight through a coating to the clear coat. On a new car there is no reason to see these as either-or. Film where the hits land, coating everywhere, is the combination we recommend most.

Which parts of a new car should get PPF?

At minimum, the front bumper, bonnet, side mirrors and door edges, because those take most of the chips and knocks. Full-body film covers every painted panel and is the choice for owners who want the whole car kept original.

When deciding coverage for a new car, think about how it will actually be used:

• Highway commuter: front end at least, plus door edges and sills.
• Weekend sports car: full body, because a single chip on a supercar bonnet is expensive to put right.
• Family SUV: front end plus rear bumper loading area, where bags and boots scuff the paint.
• Considering a new look: satin, matte or colour PPF changes the finish while protecting the paint.

Why should new cars in Dubai be protected early?

Because Dubai roads start chipping paint from the first drive. Gravel from highways and construction sites, fine sand, and intense sun all work on the paint every day, and damage that has happened cannot be filmed away.

Summer temperatures above 45C bake bird droppings and hard water onto panels quickly, and UV is strong for most of the year. Sand settles on the car overnight, and a dry wipe or an automatic brush wash drags it across the clear coat. A new car that has had a few months of this will usually need polishing before it can be protected properly, which adds time and cost and removes a little clear coat.

Protecting early avoids that. The paint goes under film or coating in factory condition, with only light preparation needed. That is also the best starting point for resale: when the film is eventually removed, the paint underneath is the paint the car left the factory with.

Early protection also changes how you wash the car from day one. A coated, filmed surface lets you rinse sand away instead of scrubbing it, so the fine swirl marks that dull many new cars within their first summer are far less likely to appear. Start with a pH-neutral shampoo, a soft mitt and the shade, and the finish stays close to how it looked at delivery.
