The film sits on top of the clear coat as a sacrificial layer. When a stone flicks up from a truck on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, the film takes the hit. Light swirls in the top layer relax and disappear with heat, which in the UAE often means a few hours parked outside.

One Juniper we covered arrived mid-morning, still without number plates, finished in Tesla’s new blue. The owner wanted protection and a look unlike any other Tesla in Dubai, so we chose XPEL Stealth. The same car had picked up micro-swirls during shipping, which is common on brand-new deliveries and a good reason to prepare the paint before any film goes on.

How do we prepare and install PPF on a Tesla Model Y?

We start with an inspection under studio lighting, correct the paint, decontaminate it, and then fit film cut on DAP precut software so no blade touches the Tesla’s paint. Everything happens in our controlled installation bays in Al Quoz.

On the Juniper Stealth build, the process looked like this:

1. Walkaround: about an hour under studio lights, checking every panel and noting the shipping swirls.
2. Multi-stage wash: removing road film and dust safely.
3. Decontamination: iron remover and clay to lift bonded particles that would otherwise sit under the film.
4. Paint correction: a single-stage machine polish to remove the micro-swirls, with no filler waxes that could hide defects or stop the film bonding.
5. Precut film: patterns from XPEL’s Design Access Program (DAP), matched to Tesla’s panel dimensions and cut on the plotter.
6. Installation: front fascia, charge port, mirrors, door handles and bonnet, with the bonnet needing careful work around its curvature and wrapped edges.

Matte and satin films are less forgiving than gloss. A speck of dust or a slightly misaligned edge shows more clearly on Stealth, so the controlled bays and the precut patterns matter even more. What does a Model Y look like in satin XPEL Stealth?

In XPEL Stealth, a gloss Model Y takes on a muted satin finish, the black trim gains contrast, and the flush door handles blend almost invisibly into the doors. The car looks factory-finished rather than wrapped.

On the Juniper we covered, the new blue paint became a soft, deep satin that changes with the light. The owner arrived early for collection and inspected the car panel by panel. What we look for at handover, and what we want the owner to find, is no visible seams, no stretch marks and no bubbles.

Gloss PPF does the opposite job visually: it keeps the Model Y looking exactly as it left the factory, and on darker colours it adds depth to the clear coat. Either way the paint underneath is protected and stays as it was on delivery day.

Why does Model Y paint need extra protection in the UAE?

Tesla paint on the Model Y is thin enough that daily UAE driving marks it quickly, and the local mix of heat, UV, sand and construction dust makes chips and fading more likely than in milder climates. PPF stops most of that wear at the film rather than the paint.

A few things make the UAE particularly tough on a Model Y:

• Heat and UV: summer surface temperatures far above 45°C and strong UV all year speed up fading and oxidation.
• Sand and dust: fine particles are abrasive, especially during quick washes with a dry cloth.
