What Is VLT in Car Window Tinting?

VLT is the percentage of visible light that passes through tinted glass. Lower means darker. Here is what each percentage looks like in Dubai.

Share on WhatsApp 8 Oct 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: VLT stands for visible light transmission. It is the percentage of visible light that passes through a car window once the film is fitted. A lower number means darker glass: 5% is near black, 35% is a medium shade and 70% looks almost clear. VLT measures darkness only, not heat rejection or UV protection.

Key facts

  • VLT means visible light transmission: the percentage of visible light that passes through the glass.
  • Lower VLT is darker. A 5% film is near black, a 70% film is close to clear.
  • Final darkness is film VLT multiplied by glass VLT, so the same film reads darker on factory privacy glass.
  • VLT does not measure heat. A light ceramic film can reject more heat than a dark basic film.
  • UAE rules allow tint up to 50% on side and rear windows. Confirm the final shade before installation.

VLT (visible light transmission) is the share of visible light, from 0% to 100%, that travels through glass and film into the cabin. Tint shops and film makers quote shades as VLT numbers, so “20% tint” means 20% of visible light gets through and 80% is blocked or absorbed.

It sounds simple, but VLT causes more confusion than any other tint term in Dubai. Owners ask for “50% tint” expecting a dark look and are surprised by how light it is. Others fit a 35% film on a Range Rover with factory privacy glass and end up with a far darker result than they planned. Both problems come from misunderstanding how VLT works on real glass.

What does VLT mean in window tint?

VLT is the percentage of visible light that passes through. It is the standard way film manufacturers label every shade, and it is the number a tint meter reads when it is clipped onto your glass.

The lower the VLT, the darker the window looks from outside and the dimmer the view from inside. A high VLT number means more light, more clarity and less privacy.

What do common tint percentages look like?

Each step down in VLT changes privacy, glare and night visibility. The table below describes common shades as they look on a typical car in Dubai daylight.

Film VLT Look from outside Privacy Night visibility Typical use
5% Near black, limo look Very high Poor Far darker than the UAE limit; exemption cases only
15% to 20% Dark High Reduced Darker than the UAE limit for road cars
30% to 35% Medium Moderate Fair Still darker than the UAE limit; check before fitting
50% Light smoke Low Good The UAE limit for side and rear windows
55% to 70% Almost clear Minimal Very good Clear look with ceramic heat rejection, well within the limit

These are film numbers on clear glass. Your actual result also depends on the glass already in the car, which is where most surprises happen.

Why does my tint look darker than the percentage?

Because the glass itself already blocks some light. The final VLT is the film’s VLT multiplied by the glass’s VLT. Car glass is never 100% clear, and many SUVs leave the factory with dark privacy glass on the rear windows.

A simple example shows the effect:

  • Front door glass at about 80% VLT with a 50% film: 0.80 x 0.50 = roughly 40% final VLT.
  • Factory privacy glass at about 20% VLT with a 50% film: 0.20 x 0.50 = roughly 10% final VLT.
  • The same film gives two very different results on the same car.

This is why a professional installer measures the glass before recommending a shade. On cars like the Nissan Patrol, Toyota Land Cruiser, BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE, the rear glass is often already dark from the factory, so the front side windows need the most careful choice.

UAE traffic rules allow window tint of up to 50% on side and rear windows. The windscreen is treated separately, with only a narrow strip permitted at the top, as reported by Gulf News citing police guidance.

In practice, treat a final reading of 50% VLT as the darkest you should aim for on side and rear glass. Darker shades are reserved for cases with an official exemption, such as certain medical conditions, and need a permit before fitting.

Enforcement uses the reading on the glass, not the label on the film box. Because glass and film combine, always ask what the final reading will be, not just which film shade is going on. Our guide to UAE window tinting covers the wider rules and film choices in more detail.

Does lower VLT mean better heat rejection?

No. VLT only measures visible light. Heat is mostly infrared, which you cannot see, so darkness is a poor guide to how cool the car will feel.

XPEL’s data shows this clearly. Its PRIME XR PLUS ceramic film at 57% VLT rejects 53% of total solar energy, while its entry CS Black film at 5% VLT rejects 45%, according to the XPEL PRIME specification sheet. The lighter film is cooler.

Choose the VLT for privacy, glare and the law. Choose the film technology for heat. Our article on heat rejection versus tint darkness breaks this down with the full numbers.

Does VLT affect UV protection?

Not in a meaningful way for quality film. Our ceramic tint range is rated at 99% UV rejection in every shade, from the lightest to the darkest. UV protection comes from inhibitors built into the film, not from how dark it looks.

That means even a very light, legal film can protect your skin and your leather from the UAE sun. Read more in our guide on whether car window tint blocks UV rays.

How Apex Detail Studio does it

We install our ceramic window film at our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz. Apex Detail Studio is XPEL accredited, with a team of 41 across preparation, installation and quality control.

  1. Inspection. We check the existing glass, including factory privacy glass, and any old film before recommending a shade.
  2. Shade advice. We explain how your chosen film will combine with your glass, so the final look matches what you expect.
  3. Preparation. Glass is deep cleaned and decontaminated. Old film is removed carefully where present.
  4. Cut and fit. Film is cut to each pane, heat formed on curved glass and squeegeed flat.
  5. Final check. Edges and every pane are checked before the car is released.

Frequently asked questions

What does VLT mean on car tint?

VLT means visible light transmission. It is the percentage of visible light that passes through the window once film is fitted. A 20% VLT film lets through 20% of visible light and blocks the rest. Lower numbers are darker. VLT does not tell you how much heat or UV the film blocks.

Is 20% or 35% tint darker?

20% is darker. VLT counts the light that gets through, so a smaller number means less light and a darker window. A 20% film lets through 20% of visible light, while a 35% film lets through 35%. Remember that factory glass also blocks some light, so the final result will be a little darker than either label.

What is the legal tint percentage in Dubai?

UAE traffic rules allow tint of up to 50% on side and rear windows, with only a narrow strip at the top of the windscreen. The police check the glass, not the film label, so ask your installer what the final reading will be on your car. Confirm current rules before choosing a shade.

How is VLT measured?

VLT is measured with a tint meter that shines light through the glass and reads how much reaches the other side. The reading covers the glass and film together. That is why the same film can read differently on two cars, especially if one has factory privacy glass on the rear windows.

Does a lower VLT block more heat?

Not necessarily. VLT only measures visible light, while most heat comes from infrared. A light ceramic film can reject more heat than a dark basic film. In XPEL data, PRIME XR PLUS at 57% VLT rejects more total solar energy than the CS Black film at 5% VLT.

What VLT should I choose for my car?

For most cars in Dubai, a ceramic film at a shade that keeps the final reading within the UAE limit gives the best balance. Choose the darkness for privacy and glare, and the film type for heat. An installer should check your glass first, because factory tint changes the final result.
