Sun damage to car paint in Dubai happens when UV breaks down the chemical bonds that give paint its colour, causing oxidation: a dull, chalky finish that ages a car and lowers its value. Heat above 40C also cracks leather and warps dashboards. We prevent it at Apex Detail Studio in Al Quoz, Dubai. Full-body PPF starts from AED 12,000 for sedans and AED 13,500 for SUVs and trucks (colour PPF from AED 15,000), depending on options, before 5% VAT.

What does the sun do to car paint?
UV rays penetrate the paint layers and break down the chemical bonds that give paint its colour. The result is oxidation: the finish loses gloss, the colour fades, and the surface takes on a dull, chalky look that makes even a recent car look old.
Modern cars have a clear coat over the colour layer, and that clear coat takes the first hit. As UV and heat wear it down, it loses its ability to reflect light cleanly, so the paint looks flat. Left long enough, the clear coat can start to cloud or fail, and at that point polishing no longer fixes it; the panel needs repainting.
Damage builds slowly, which is why owners often notice it late. The horizontal panels, roof, bonnet and boot lid, face the sun most directly and usually go first. Darker colours absorb more heat and show the change sooner, while reds and some metallics are known for fading. The damage is also cumulative and, past a point, irreversible: you can slow it and prevent it, but you cannot undo a failed clear coat.
Why is sun damage worse for cars in Dubai?
Because Dubai combines intense UV with extreme heat, with temperatures regularly above 40C and peaking above 45C in summer, and many cars sit outside for hours every day. Paint and interiors simply get more exposure here than in milder climates.
A car parked in the open at work or at a mall bakes for the whole day. The interior of a closed car can reach dangerous temperatures, far hotter than the air outside. Add sand that scratches the weakened clear coat during washing, and bird droppings or hard water that etch faster on a hot panel, and you can see why paint in Dubai ages more quickly when it is left unprotected.
Sun damage also costs money at resale. Faded paint, a cracked dashboard and dry, creased leather all tell a buyer the car has lived outside, and they price that in.

What does sun damage do to a car’s interior?
Heat and UV dry out leather until it becomes brittle and cracks, fade and weaken fabric, and cause dashboards, steering wheels and other plastic parts to fade, warp or crack.
| Material | What the sun does | What you notice |
|---|---|---|
| Leather | Dries out its natural oils | Stiffness, creasing, cracks, faded colour |
| Vinyl and plastics | Heat and UV make them brittle | Fading, warping, cracks on the dashboard and trim |
| Fabric | UV breaks down dyes and fibres | Faded seats and headlining, weakened fabric |
| Dashboard surface | Fades and can turn shiny or cracked | Glare reflected onto the windscreen |
That last point is a safety issue as well as a cosmetic one. A sun-damaged dashboard can reflect distracting glare onto the windscreen while you drive. Interior damage is also expensive to fix properly, because cracked leather and warped trim often need replacing rather than repairing.
Which parts of a car suffer the most sun damage?
The roof, bonnet and boot lid suffer most on the outside, because they face the sun directly. Inside, the dashboard, the tops of the seats, the steering wheel and the rear parcel shelf take the most exposure.
Beyond the paint, several other exterior parts age quickly in strong sun. Headlight lenses can cloud and turn yellow. Black plastic trim, mirror caps and window surrounds can fade to grey. Rubber seals dry out and crack, and wiper blades harden. Even wheel finishes can dull when brake dust is left to bake on.
Inside, anything near the glass gets the worst of it. The dashboard sits directly under the windscreen, so it heats up more than any other surface. The steering wheel and gear selector get hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch, and their leather or coatings wear faster as a result. Seat bolsters and headrests close to the side windows fade before the rest of the seat. Knowing where damage starts tells you where to focus: film or coating on the horizontal panels, tint on the glass, and regular conditioning for the leather that sits closest to the sun.

What are the early signs of sun damage on a car?
Look for paint that looks duller on the roof and bonnet than on the doors, colour that seems lighter or patchy, and a chalky residue on your fingers when you touch the panel. Inside, watch for stiff or creased leather and a dashboard that has faded or started to shine.
- Gloss on horizontal panels lower than on vertical ones.
- Faded colour, especially on reds and dark shades.
- Chalky or powdery feel on the paint.
- Clear coat that looks cloudy or starts to peel at the edges of panels.
- Faded trim and rubber seals.
- Leather that feels dry or has fine surface cracks.
- Faded seat tops and rear parcel shelf where sun hits directly.
Caught early, light oxidation can usually be polished out with paint correction before the clear coat fails. That is the best moment to add protection, because it then goes onto restored paint.
How do PPF and ceramic coating prevent sun damage to paint?
Both put a UV-resistant layer between the sun and the clear coat. Paint protection film is a virtually invisible urethane film bonded to the paint that blocks UV, road debris and contaminants. Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds chemically to the paint, resists UV and adds a deep, hydrophobic gloss.
Film offers the most complete protection: UV resistance, self-healing of light scratches and swirls with heat, and resistance to stains from bird droppings, tree sap and pollutants, plus protection from stone chips. Ceramic coating is the lower-maintenance option for owners who mainly want UV resistance, gloss and easier cleaning, and it can also go on top of film as an extra layer.
We are an XPEL accredited installer and Gtechniq accredited for ceramic coatings, and we fit both indoors at our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz. Good films are built to resist UV and yellowing themselves; our article on why PPF turns yellow explains what to look for. One example from our studio is the 2024 Lotus Emira First Edition, protected with film. Our paint protection film page has the coverage options.

How do you prevent sun damage to a car interior?
Tint the windows to cut heat and UV at the glass, and treat the materials themselves: condition leather so it stays supple, treat vinyl and plastics so they stay flexible and UV resistant, and use fabric protection that repels stains and slows fading.
- Window tint: reduces the heat entering the car, blocks most of the harmful UV, cuts glare and adds privacy and security.
- Leather conditioning: replaces the moisture that heat removes, preventing drying and cracking.
- Vinyl and plastic treatment: keeps the dashboard and trim flexible and resistant to UV.
- Fabric protection: coatings that repel stains and help prevent fading.
Regular treatment is far cheaper than replacing a dashboard or retrimming seats. Our guide to car interior cleaning in Dubai covers the interior service in detail.
Can sun damage on a car be repaired?
Light oxidation and dullness can often be corrected by machine polishing, which removes the damaged top layer of clear coat and restores gloss. Once the clear coat has failed or peeled, the panel needs repainting. Cracked leather and warped trim usually need replacing.
That is why prevention is the better route. Every round of polishing removes a little clear coat, so a car that is repeatedly left to oxidise and then polished eventually runs out of clear coat to work with. Correcting the paint once and then protecting it with film or a coating breaks that cycle. For PPF, pricing starts from AED 12,000 for sedans and AED 13,500 for SUVs and trucks (colour PPF from AED 15,000), depending on options, before 5% VAT. For ceramic coating, tint and interior protection, pricing depends on the car and the package; send your car details on WhatsApp for an exact quote.

Frequently asked questions
Can the sun really damage car paint?
Yes. UV breaks down the chemical bonds in paint, causing oxidation, fading and a chalky finish, and the damage builds over time.
How do I know if my car paint is sun damaged?
Compare the roof and bonnet with the doors. If the horizontal panels look duller, lighter or feel chalky, the paint is oxidising.
Can oxidised paint be fixed?
Light oxidation can usually be polished out. If the clear coat has failed or is peeling, the panel needs repainting.
Does window tint stop interior sun damage?
It blocks most UV and cuts heat at the glass, which greatly slows fading and cracking. Leather and plastics still benefit from regular conditioning.
Is PPF or ceramic better against sun damage?
Both resist UV. PPF also stops chips and scratches; ceramic adds gloss and easier cleaning. Many owners in Dubai use both.
Why does my dashboard crack in Dubai?
Heat and UV make vinyl and plastics brittle. Tint, a sunshade and regular UV protectant treatment help prevent it.
