How to Care for Newly Installed Window Tint

What to do in the first week after window tinting in Dubai: curing time, normal haze, safe cleaning and the habits that damage film.

Share on WhatsApp 8 Oct 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: After new window tint is fitted, keep the windows fully closed for at least three to five days, do not clean the inside of the glass for the first week, and ignore light haze or small water pockets while the film cures. After that, clean only with a mild, ammonia-free solution and a soft microfibre cloth.

Key facts

  • Windows up: at least three to five days, so the film edge does not catch and peel.
  • Haze and water pockets: normal while moisture evaporates; the manufacturer says haze should clear over a few days, depending on climate.
  • Cleaning: an ammonia-free glass cleaner or mild soapy water with a soft microfibre cloth; no harsh products or bristle brushes.
  • Warranty: PRIME XR and PRIME XR PLUS carry a lifetime manufacturer warranty, and improper tools may void it.
  • Best for: anyone who has just had a quality window film fitted.

The first week after tinting decides how the film looks for years afterwards. Almost every peeled corner we see on a car that comes in for re-tinting started the same way: a window dropped on day two, or a scraper used on the inside of the glass.

Dubai helps and hurts in equal measure. The heat speeds up curing, so haze disappears faster than in cooler climates. But the same heat makes owners want to drop the windows at the first traffic light, and sand on the door seals can scratch soft, uncured film. Here is exactly what to do and what to avoid.

How long should I keep my windows up after tinting?

Keep every tinted window fully closed for at least three to five days. If your installer gives a longer time for your car, follow that.

Window film is held on by a pressure-sensitive adhesive that needs time to bond as the mounting solution dries. Until it bonds, the top edge of a door window is the weak point. When the glass drops into the door, the felt seal can catch that edge and roll it back. Once it lifts, it rarely sits flat again.

Frameless glass needs extra care. On a Tesla Model 3, Porsche Taycan or BMW 4 Series coupé, the window drops slightly every time you open the door. That movement is normal, but avoid using the window switches until the curing period is over.

Is haze or bubbling normal after window tinting?

Yes. Light haze and small water pockets are normal for the first days after fitting, while the remaining moisture evaporates through the film. They should clear without any action from you.

XPEL’s window film care guidance explains that haze comes from mounting solution under the film and clears on its own over a few days, depending on climate. In a Dubai summer that is usually quicker. In the cooler months, or on a car kept in a shaded basement, it can take longer.

The difference between normal curing and a real fault is shown below. If you see anything in the right-hand column, contact your installer rather than trying to fix it yourself.

What you see Normal while curing? What to do
Light, even haze across the glass Yes Leave it; it clears as moisture evaporates
Small water pockets that shrink each day Yes Leave them; do not press them out
Haze that has not changed after several weeks No Contact your installer
Air bubbles that do not shrink No Usually trapped air or contamination; contact your installer
Lifting or peeling edge No Do not use the window; contact your installer
Specks of dust or hair under the film No Show the installer at the next visit
Purple or fading film No A sign of failing dyed film, not a curing issue

If an older film has started to turn purple or blister, it is a product problem, not an aftercare one. Our article on why window tint bubbles, peels or turns purple explains the causes.

How do I clean tinted windows without damaging the film?

Wait about a week before cleaning the inside of the glass. After that, use a mild, ammonia-free cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth, wiping gently in straight lines.

  1. Spray the cloth, not the glass. This stops liquid running down into the door seal and onto the film edge.
  2. Use a mild cleaner. The manufacturer recommends XPEL Glass Cleaner or a mild dishwashing detergent in water. Avoid harsh household glass cleaners, many of which contain ammonia.
  3. Wipe, do not scrub. Use a clean, soft microfibre cloth. No bristle brushes, scourers or rough paper.
  4. Dry with a second cloth. A dry microfibre removes streaks without pressure.
  5. Keep blades away. Never use a razor or scraper on the inside of tinted glass.

The outside of the glass is untinted, so you can wash the car normally after the first few days. Just keep the windows closed, and avoid pointing a pressure washer directly at window edges and seals.

What should I avoid after getting my car tinted?

Most damage to good film is mechanical rather than chemical. A few everyday habits cause most of it.

  • Seatbelt buckles. On coupés and many SUVs, the buckle swings against the rear quarter glass when released. Guide it back by hand.
  • Suction mounts and stickers. Phone holders, parking permits and sunshade suction cups can mark the film or lift it when pulled off.
  • Rings and keys. Rings and key fobs can nick the film when you lean on the glass.
  • Rear defroster. The defroster lines sit under the film on the rear windscreen. Do not pick at them or scrub that area.
  • Cargo. Golf bags, bikes and luggage sliding against the rear glass in a Land Cruiser or Patrol will scratch film quickly.

Does window tint need maintenance in the long term?

Very little. Quality ceramic film needs gentle cleaning and sensible habits, nothing more. It does not need waxing, coating or polishing on the inside.

XPEL backs its PRIME XR and PRIME XR PLUS films with a lifetime warranty against bubbling, peeling, fading and discolouration. Keep your installation receipt and warranty details safe. The care guidance warns that improper tools may void the warranty, so the aftercare above protects your cover as well as the film.

How Apex Detail Studio does it

Good aftercare starts with a clean installation. At our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz, a team of 41 handles preparation, installation and quality control.

  1. Inspection. We check the glass, seals and any old film before agreeing the shade and film line.
  2. Glass preparation. Every window is deep-cleaned inside, including edges where dust collects.
  3. Cutting and shaping. The film is cut to each window and heat-shrunk to curved glass.
  4. Installation. Film is applied from inside and the mounting solution is squeegeed out firmly.
  5. Final check and handover. We inspect each window, then explain the curing period and cleaning steps for your car.

Frequently asked questions

How long after tinting can I roll down my windows?

Keep tinted windows fully closed for at least three to five days, or longer if your installer advises it for your car. The adhesive needs time to bond as the mounting solution dries. Dropping the glass too early lets the door seal catch the top edge of the film and peel it back.

Why does my new tint look hazy or have water bubbles?

Haze and small water pockets come from the mounting solution still trapped under the film. The manufacturer says this haze is normal and clears on its own over a few days, depending on climate. Dubai heat often speeds it up. Bubbles that never shrink, or haze that lasts weeks, should be checked by the installer.

When can I clean the inside of tinted windows?

Wait about a week before cleaning the inside of the glass. Then use an ammonia-free glass cleaner or mild soapy water on a soft microfibre cloth, spraying the cloth rather than the glass. Avoid harsh household cleaners, bristle brushes and any blade or scraper on the inside of tinted windows.

Can I wash my car after window tinting?

Yes, after the first few days. The film sits on the inside of the glass, so a normal exterior wash does not touch it. Keep the windows closed while washing, and avoid aiming a pressure washer straight at window edges and rubber seals, especially in the first week.

Does ammonia damage window tint?

Harsh cleaners are the risk. Many household glass cleaners contain ammonia, and the manufacturer advises against harsh cleaning products on its film. Using an ammonia-free glass cleaner or a mild detergent solution with a soft microfibre cloth is the safe choice and helps protect your warranty.

What voids a window tint warranty?

Terms come from the film manufacturer. XPEL covers PRIME XR and PRIME XR PLUS with a lifetime warranty against bubbling, peeling, fading and discolouration, and its care guidance notes that improper tools may void it. Keep your receipt and warranty details, and avoid scrapers, abrasive cloths and harsh chemicals.
