Quick answer: For most drivers in Dubai, the right tint shade is the darkest one that stays within the UAE’s 50 per cent limit on side and rear glass, in a ceramic film. That gives daytime privacy and strong heat rejection while keeping mirrors and night driving clear. Darker shades add privacy but cost visibility and risk fines.

Key facts
- Legal limit: side and rear windows up to 50 per cent tint under UAE traffic law; the windscreen stays clear without a permit.
- Heat comes from the film, not the shade: the top ceramic film in our range rejects up to 96% of infrared heat, per its maker.
- Factory privacy glass plus film stacks up, so we check the finished glass, not just the film label.
- Price: quoted per car, driven by vehicle size, number of windows and film line.
- Best for: anyone choosing between a lighter, clearer look and a darker, more private cabin.

Every tint conversation in Dubai starts the same way. The owner wants the cabin cooler and wants people to stop looking in at the lights on Al Wasl Road. Then the questions arrive: how dark is legal, will I see at night, and will a darker film actually feel cooler?
Those three goals pull in different directions. Privacy wants dark glass. Visibility wants clear glass. Heat rejection, surprisingly, does not care much about darkness at all once you choose the right film. This guide sets out the trade-off so you can pick a shade once and live with it happily.
What does tint percentage actually mean?
Tint percentage describes visible light transmission (VLT): the share of visible light that passes through the glass and film. A lower number means darker glass. A 70% film is light; a 5% film is close to black.
The number on the film box is only part of the story. Car glass is rarely perfectly clear, and many SUVs leave the factory with darker privacy glass on the rear windows. When film goes over that glass, the two combine. The finished window is always darker than the film alone.
That is why we look at the result on the car, not just the label. A Range Rover or Lexus LX with factory privacy glass can end up much darker at the back than the owner expects if the same film is used all round.
How dark can car tint be in the UAE?
UAE traffic law caps window tint at 50 per cent, and only the side and rear windows can be tinted to that level. The windscreen must stay clear unless the owner holds a permit.
Gulf News reports a Dh1,500 fine for exceeding the permitted tint percentage. Dubai has also introduced impoundment for excessive tint, with a reported Dh10,000 release fee. Those penalties, not just appearance, should shape your shade choice.
Medical exemptions and permits are handled through the authorities, not the tint studio. Our UAE window tinting guide covers the rules, permits and film options in full.
Which tint shade gives the best balance of privacy and visibility?
A shade close to the 50 per cent limit is the sweet spot for most Dubai drivers. It cuts glare and gives reasonable daytime privacy, while the driver keeps clear sight lines through the mirrors at night.
| Film shade (VLT) | Look from outside in daylight | Driver’s view at night | Privacy | UAE road use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70% (light) | Almost clear, slight tint | Excellent | Low | Within the limit on side and rear glass |
| 50% (medium) | Noticeably tinted, faces visible up close | Very good | Moderate | At the limit on side and rear glass |
| 35% (dark) | Dark, faces hard to read | Reduced on unlit roads | Good | Darker than the 50 per cent limit |
| 20% (very dark) | Very dark, silhouettes only | Poor in car parks and side streets | High | Darker than the 50 per cent limit |
| 5% (limo) | Near black | Very poor | Very high | Not legal for normal road use |
The percentages above describe the film. On factory privacy glass, the finished window will be darker. If you want the cabin cool without pushing the shade, heat rejection is the lever to pull, not darkness.

Does darker tint keep the car cooler?
Not necessarily. Heat rejection depends on what the film is made of, not how dark it looks. A light nano-ceramic film can keep a cabin cooler than a dark dyed film.
Most of the heat you feel through glass is infrared energy, which the eye cannot see. Dyed films darken visible light but absorb heat, which then radiates into the cabin. Ceramic films target infrared directly. According to XPEL, PRIME XR rejects up to 85% of infrared heat and PRIME XR PLUS up to 96%, with both blocking 99% of harmful UV.
That changes the decision. You no longer need to choose a dark shade to beat the summer. You can pick the shade for privacy and visibility, then choose the film line for heat.
How does tint darkness affect driving at night?
Darker tint reduces the light reaching your eyes, which matters most when you look through side windows to your mirrors. In poorly lit areas, a very dark film can hide cyclists, kerbs and bollards.
Dubai’s main roads are well lit, so the problem rarely shows on Sheikh Zayed Road. It appears in basement car parks in JLT and Business Bay, on unlit desert roads towards Hatta, and when reversing into a villa driveway in Arabian Ranches. That is where the difference between 50% and 20% becomes obvious.
If you drive late regularly, stay at or near the legal shade on the front side windows. Read our guide on how tint darkness affects night-time visibility for a fuller explanation.
Should every window have the same shade?
Not always. Many owners use the same legal shade all round for a uniform look, but the rear may already be darker if the car has factory privacy glass. Matching the finished look matters more than matching the film number.
| Your priority | Front side windows | Rear side and rear windscreen | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear visibility, daily commuting | Light to medium ceramic film | Medium ceramic film | Best for night drivers and new drivers |
| Balanced privacy and comfort | Medium ceramic film, at the legal limit | Medium ceramic film, at the legal limit | The most common choice in Dubai |
| Family SUV with rear passengers | Medium ceramic film | Ceramic film matched to factory privacy glass | Keeps children shaded without making the rear too dark |
| Maximum heat rejection, minimum darkness | Light PRIME XR PLUS | Light or medium PRIME XR PLUS | Infrared rejection without a dark look |
On cars like the Tesla Model Y, the large rear windscreen sits close to passengers’ heads, so owners often prioritise it. Our guide to the best window tint for Tesla and EVs covers those model-specific choices.
Does the colour of the car change how dark tint looks?
Yes, quite a lot. The same film looks darker on a black car and lighter on a white one, because of the contrast between body and glass.
A black G-Class with a medium film looks almost blacked out from the kerb. A white Land Cruiser with the same film looks tinted but open. Interior colour matters too: a black cabin makes glass look darker from outside, a cream or tan cabin makes it look lighter.
The simplest way to judge is to see samples held against your own car in daylight. That is part of every inspection at our studio.
What changes the price of window tint?
Tint is quoted per car. The shade itself rarely changes the price. The film line, the amount of glass and any old film removal do.
- Film line. PRIME XR PLUS sits above PRIME XR.
- Vehicle size. A Nissan Patrol or Cadillac Escalade has far more glass than a Porsche 911.
- Coverage. Side and rear glass only, or a sunroof or panoramic roof as well.
- Old film removal. Stripping faded or bubbling film and its adhesive adds labour.
- Combined bookings. Tint alongside PPF or ceramic coating in one visit.

How Apex Detail Studio does it
Shade choice happens before any film is cut. At our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz, we are XPEL accredited, and a team of 41 handles preparation, installation and quality control.
- Inspection and samples. We check the factory glass, any existing film and the interior colour, then show shades against your car.
- Shade agreed per window. We confirm the film and shade for each window so the finished look is consistent.
- Glass preparation. Every window is deep-cleaned inside, including the edges and seals.
- Cutting and shaping. The ceramic window film is cut to each window and heat-shrunk to curved glass.
- Installation. Film is applied from inside, with clean edges around seals, defroster lines and sensors.
- Final check. Each window is inspected for dust, lifting and clarity before release, with aftercare advice.

After fitting, the film needs a few days to cure. Our guide on how to care for newly installed window tint explains what to do and avoid. For films and options, see our page on window tinting in Dubai.
Frequently asked questions
What tint percentage is legal in Dubai?
UAE traffic law allows window tint up to 50 per cent on the side and rear windows. The windscreen must stay clear unless you hold a permit. Gulf News reports a Dh1,500 fine for exceeding the permitted tint, and Dubai can impound cars with excessive tint. We fit shades that keep the finished glass within the limit.
Is 50% tint dark enough for privacy?
For most people, yes in daylight. A 50 per cent film makes the cabin noticeably darker from outside, so passers-by see shapes rather than detail unless they come close. It will not give limousine-style privacy, but it keeps you legal and preserves good visibility through your mirrors at night.
Does darker tint reject more heat?
Not by itself. Heat rejection depends on the film’s construction. A light nano-ceramic film such as PRIME XR PLUS, which its maker rates at up to 96% infrared rejection, can keep a cabin cooler than a dark dyed film. Choose the shade for privacy and the film line for heat.
Can I see clearly at night with tinted windows?
With a shade at or near the legal limit, most drivers see well on Dubai’s lit roads. Visibility drops with darker films, especially in basement car parks, on unlit desert roads and when reversing. If you drive late often, keep the front side windows at or near the legal shade.
Why does my rear glass look darker than the front after tinting?
Many SUVs have factory privacy glass on the rear windows. When film goes over that glass, the two combine, so the finished window is darker than the film alone. We check the factory glass during inspection and can match the finished look front to rear rather than simply matching film numbers.
How do I choose the right tint shade for my car?
Start with the legal limit, then think about how you drive. Night drivers and new drivers do best with lighter film. Families often want the rear shaded. The car’s paint and interior colour also change how dark film looks. Seeing samples held against your own car in daylight is the most reliable way to decide.
