Quick answer: Interior ceramic protection is a thin, invisible coating applied to clean leather, fabric, Alcantara and other interior surfaces. It helps liquid spills bead up instead of soaking in, reduces dye transfer from jeans on light leather, and makes the interior easier to clean. It does not make seats stain-proof or scratch-proof, and it cannot repair existing wear. The surfaces must be deep-cleaned first, because the coating seals in whatever is there.

Key facts
- What it does: makes spills bead, slows staining and dye transfer, and makes cleaning easier.
- Surfaces: leather, fabric, Alcantara and suede-style materials, carpets and mats, with products chosen per material.
- What it does not do: stop cuts, scuffs, cracking from age, or permanent damage from neglect.
- Preparation: interiors are deep-cleaned first, because the coating seals in dirt and stains.
- Products: Apex is Gtechniq accredited and selects interior protection to suit each material.
Light leather or a family car? WhatsApp us your model and the team will reply with an interior protection quote.
Light leather looks fantastic in the showroom. Then come the jeans, the coffee, the kids and the sand. Within a year, cream or tan seats can look grey at the edges, and fabric seats can carry every spill.
Interior ceramic protection is designed to slow that down. It is not magic, and it is often oversold. This guide explains honestly what it does, what it cannot do and how to look after a protected interior.
What does interior ceramic protection do?
Interior protection products form a thin, flexible layer on or within the surface of leather and textiles. On fabric, the coating repels liquids so a spill beads up and can be blotted away before it soaks in. On leather, it adds a protective layer over the factory finish that resists dye transfer and makes dirt easier to wipe off.
| Surface | Main benefit | Typical problem it helps with |
|---|---|---|
| Light leather | Resists dye transfer and grime build-up | Blue jeans marks on cream or tan seats |
| Dark leather | Easier cleaning, keeps a natural finish | Grime and body oils on bolsters |
| Fabric seats | Spills bead up instead of soaking in | Coffee, juice and food stains |
| Alcantara and suede-style | Repels liquid without changing the feel | Spills and matting on steering wheels and seats |
| Carpets and mats | Easier cleaning of sand and spills | Ground-in dirt in the footwells |

What can interior ceramic protection not do?
Be wary of anyone promising a stain-proof or indestructible interior. A coating cannot:
- Stop cuts, scratches or scuffs from keys, buckles, pets or child seats.
- Repair existing cracks, wear, colour loss or old stains.
- Prevent damage if spills are left for days in the heat.
- Replace regular cleaning; it makes cleaning easier, not unnecessary.
It also does not protect gloss-black trim or screens from scratches. For those surfaces, interior PPF is the right product.
Why does the interior need deep cleaning first?
The coating bonds to whatever surface it is applied to. If leather still has grime and old conditioner on it, or fabric has stains in it, the coating locks them in and may not bond properly.
Before protection, the interior is vacuumed, the leather cleaned with a dedicated leather cleaner, fabrics and carpets deep-cleaned and the surfaces left fully dry. Seams, perforations and the edges of bolsters get particular attention, because that is where dirt builds up.
How is interior protection applied?
Each material gets a product suited to it. Leather protection is applied to clean, dry leather and worked in evenly. Fabric protection is usually applied in light, even coats so it does not leave rings or stiffen the material. Alcantara needs a product that will not mat the fibres.
As a Gtechniq accredited studio, we choose from professional interior products, such as fabric protection for textiles and dedicated leather protection, and follow the manufacturer’s curing guidance before the car is used.

How should a protected interior be maintained?
- Blot spills quickly with a clean microfibre cloth. Do not rub.
- Vacuum regularly to remove sand, which is abrasive on leather and fabric.
- Wipe leather with a pH-neutral interior cleaner, not household products or wet wipes.
- Avoid strong solvents, alcohol-based cleaners and magic erasers, which can strip the coating.
- Use sunshades in summer; heat and UV are hard on any interior.
- Have the protection inspected and topped up as advised.
Should I combine interior and exterior protection?
Many owners protect the inside and outside together, especially on a new car. A common combination is PPF or ceramic coating on the paint, window tint to cut heat and UV, and interior protection on the seats.
Tint matters more than people expect for interiors. Good ceramic tint reduces the heat and UV that dry out leather. Our article on whether window tint blocks UV explains why. For the exterior side of ceramic coating, see what ceramic coating actually protects against.
Frequently asked questions
Does interior ceramic coating work on leather?
Yes. It adds a protective layer over the leather’s finish that resists dye transfer and grime and makes cleaning easier. It does not stop cuts, scratches or wear from age.
Can interior protection stop jeans staining light leather?
It significantly reduces dye transfer, which is the main cause of blue marks on cream and tan seats. Regular wiping is still needed, and very heavy dye transfer can still mark the surface over time.
Does it work on fabric and Alcantara?
Yes, with products made for those materials. Liquids bead on the surface so spills can be blotted away. The right product does not change the feel of the material.
Is interior protection the same as interior PPF?
No. Interior protection is a coating for leather and textiles. Interior PPF is a clear film for hard gloss surfaces like screens and piano-black trim, which scratch easily.
How do I clean a protected interior?
Blot spills, vacuum regularly and use a pH-neutral interior cleaner. Avoid household cleaners, alcohol-based products and magic erasers, which can strip the coating.
How do I get a quote for interior protection?
Send us your make, model and year, the seat material and photos of the interior on WhatsApp. We confirm the scope after seeing the car.
