Quick answer: Ceramic coating protects paint against water spots, bird droppings, insect remains, tree sap, harsh wash chemicals, light wash marring and gradual UV dulling, and it makes dirt and sand rinse off far more easily. It does not protect against stone chips, deep scratches, door dings or careless washing. For impact protection you need paint protection film.

A ceramic coating is a liquid coating, usually silica-based, that chemically bonds to the clear coat and cures into a thin, hard, slick layer. Think of it as a tougher, longer-lasting replacement for wax. It changes how the surface behaves, not how thick it is.
That distinction matters in Dubai. The threats here are both chemical and physical. Chemical: hard water drying in 45°C heat, bird droppings baked onto a black roof, sap from the trees in Emirates Hills car parks. Physical: grit thrown up on Sheikh Zayed Road, sand dragged by a wash mitt, a stray trolley at the supermarket. A coating handles the first group well. It barely touches the second.
What does ceramic coating protect against?
Ceramic coating protects against chemical and environmental contamination, and it makes the paint far easier to keep clean. Here is what it genuinely does on a Dubai car.
- Water spots. Water beads and sheets off, so less of it dries on the paint. Mineral deposits sit on the coating rather than on the clear coat.
- Bird droppings, insects and sap. The coating resists acidic attack long enough for you to remove them safely. Speed still matters in summer.
- Wash chemicals. Professional coatings resist strong shampoos and cleaners. Gtechniq says its Crystal Serum Ultra resists strong acids and alkalis.
- Light wash marring. A harder, slicker surface resists some of the fine marks from careful washing.
- UV dulling and oxidation. The coating adds a sacrificial layer that helps slow the gradual fade of the clear coat.
- Dust and sand build-up. Low surface energy means sand, dust and road film rinse away with less scrubbing.
What does ceramic coating not protect against?
Ceramic coating does not protect against physical impact or deep abrasion. It is too thin. A coating is measured in microns, while paint protection film is a thick urethane layer built to absorb damage.
- Stone chips from lorries and roadworks on the E11, E311 and Emirates Road.
- Deep scratches from keys, trolleys, bushes and car park pillars.
- Door dings and dents.
- Swirls from bad washing. Brush washes and dry wiping still scratch through.
- Existing defects. A coating seals in whatever is underneath. It does not remove swirls or etching.
The “9H” claim on many coatings adds to the confusion. It sounds like armour. It is not. Our article on what 9H hardness really means explains why the number says little about scratch resistance.
Ceramic coating protection at a glance
This table shows how a quality professional coating handles the common threats to paint in Dubai, compared with bare paint and with PPF.
| Threat in Dubai | Bare paint | Ceramic coating | PPF |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard water spots | Etch quickly in heat | Strong resistance, still dry the car | Strong resistance |
| Bird droppings and sap | Can etch within hours | Resists long enough to remove safely | Film takes the damage |
| Harsh wash chemicals | Strips wax and sealant | Resists strong cleaners | Resists, coating on top helps |
| UV dulling | Fades over time | Helps slow oxidation | Shields the paint beneath |
| Sand and dust build-up | Clings, needs scrubbing | Rinses off easily | Rinses off easily with a coating |
| Light wash marring | Scratches easily | Some resistance | Self-heals light marks |
| Stone chips | Chips to primer | No protection | Absorbs impacts |
| Deep scratches and dings | Damaged | No protection | Resists scuffs, not dents |

How long does ceramic coating protection last in Dubai?
It depends on the product, the preparation and how the car is washed. Gtechniq lists its EXOv5 coating at 18 to 24 months, while its professional-only Crystal Serum Ultra carries a nine-year manufacturer guarantee with conditions.
Gtechniq’s own Crystal Serum Ultra FAQ is clear that care decides the outcome: the coating should reach its guarantee period with good washing and compatible products. In Dubai, the biggest enemies of coating life are brush washes, aggressive chemicals and letting contamination bake on. Our guide to how long ceramic coating lasts in Dubai covers the variables in detail.
Do I need PPF as well as ceramic coating?
You need PPF if stone chips and scratches are a real concern, which they are for most new cars that use Dubai’s highways. A coating alone is enough for an older daily driver, a car that rarely leaves the city or an owner who mainly wants gloss and easier washing.
Many owners combine both. PPF goes on the high-impact areas or the whole car, and a film-safe coating goes over the top to add slickness and stain resistance. Full-body STEK PPF starts from AED 11,000 and full-body XPEL from AED 15,000 for a sedan or coupe at Apex Detail Studio, before 5% VAT. How Apex Detail Studio applies ceramic coating
Protection only works if it bonds to clean, corrected paint. Every coating at our 20,000 sq ft Al Quoz studio follows the same process, carried out by a team of 41 and backed by our Gtechniq accreditation.
- Inspection. We check paint condition and confirm whether coating alone or coating plus PPF makes sense.
- Wash and decontamination. Sand, tar and iron fallout are removed.
- Paint correction where needed. Swirls and etching are polished out, because a coating would lock them in.
- Panel wipe. Polishing oils are removed so the coating bonds properly.
- Application and levelling. The Gtechniq coating is applied panel by panel and checked for high spots under lighting.
- Indoor curing and handover. The car cures indoors, then we explain aftercare before release.

Frequently asked questions
Does ceramic coating protect against scratches?
Only against very light wash marring. A good coating is harder and slicker than bare clear coat, so it resists some of the fine marks from washing. It will not stop key scratches, trolley scrapes or deep marks from a dirty towel dragged across sand. For real scratch and chip resistance, paint protection film is the right product.
Does ceramic coating stop stone chips?
No. A ceramic coating is a very thin layer measured in microns, far too thin to absorb the impact of a stone thrown up on the E11 or E311. Chips go straight through to the paint. Paint protection film is a thick, flexible urethane layer designed to take those hits instead.
Does ceramic coating protect against bird droppings in Dubai?
It helps a lot, as long as you act quickly. A coating resists chemical attack and keeps droppings sitting on top rather than biting into the clear coat straight away. In summer heat, remove them the same day. Left for days on a hot bonnet, droppings can still etch through a coating and into the paint.
Does ceramic coating prevent water spots?
It reduces them but does not make a car immune. The coating makes water bead and run off, so less sits on the paint. Hard water that dries in the sun still leaves mineral deposits on top, and these can etch if ignored. Drying the car properly after every wash is still essential.
Does ceramic coating protect against UV and fading?
A coating adds a sacrificial layer over the clear coat that helps slow oxidation and keeps the finish glossy. It is not a substitute for shade or for a healthy clear coat. On cars that live outdoors in Dubai, roofs and bonnets still age fastest, coated or not, so parking in shade helps.
Is ceramic coating worth it if it does not stop chips?
Yes, if you value gloss and easier cleaning. Sand and dust rinse off more easily, water spots and droppings are easier to remove, and the paint stays looking freshly polished for longer. If chips are your main worry, choose PPF, and consider a coating on top of the film.
