Quick answer: 9H refers to the hardest grade on the pencil hardness scale, a simple lab test where pencils of rising hardness are pushed across a coated test panel to see which one first marks it. A 9H result means the coating film resisted a 9H pencil under test conditions, not that the car is scratch proof, chip proof or harder than glass. A ceramic coating is a very thin layer, so it can reduce light wash marring and make cleaning easier, but stone chips, key scratches and careless drying can still damage the paint beneath. Preparation, the specific product and how the car is washed matter far more than the number on the box.

Key facts
- What 9H is: the top grade on the pencil hardness scale, which runs from soft (6B) through HB to hard (9H).
- What it is not: a measure of chip resistance, scratch proofing or how long a coating lasts.
- Thickness: a ceramic coating is a thin film, nowhere near the thickness of paint protection film.
- Product claims vary: Gtechniq describes Crystal Serum Ultra as a hard top layer over a softer base layer rather than a single 9H number.
- Where Apex works: our Gtechniq accredited team prepares and coats cars at our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz.

Almost every ceramic coating advert in Dubai carries the same badge: 9H. It appears on cheap online kits, on mall kiosk offers and on premium professional coatings alike, and it is usually presented as proof that the car will shrug off scratches.
That is not what the number means. Owners who expect it to stop stone chips on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road are usually disappointed within months. This guide explains what the rating measures and what to compare instead.
What does 9H mean on a ceramic coating?
9H means the coating passed the highest grade of a pencil hardness test. The test uses a set of graphite pencils graded from soft to hard. Each pencil is pushed across a cured film at a fixed angle and pressure, and the result is the hardest pencil that does not scratch or gouge it.
| Pencil grade | Where it sits | What a pass tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 6B to B | Soft end of the scale | The film marks easily under light pressure |
| HB to F | Middle of the scale | Typical of many everyday coatings and paints |
| H to 6H | Hard | Good resistance to light abrasion in the test |
| 9H | Top of the scale | The film resisted the hardest pencil in the set under test conditions |
The test is a useful comparison tool in a laboratory. It is not a real-world damage rating, and results depend on the panel, the film thickness, the cure and how the test was performed.

Does a 9H coating make paint scratch proof?
No. A ceramic coating adds a thin, hard, slick layer on top of the clear coat, but it is far too thin to absorb real impacts. A grain of sand dragged across the bonnet by a dirty mitt, a ring on a door handle or a supermarket trolley can still mark the paint.
What a good coating does well is reduce the light marring that comes from careful washing, resist chemical etching for longer and make dirt release more easily, so you touch the paint less. Our guide on what ceramic coating actually protects against lists the real benefits and limits side by side.
- Helps with: light wash marring, water spotting, bird droppings and sap if cleaned promptly, UV fade, ease of cleaning.
- Does not stop: stone chips, deep scratches, dents, vandalism, damage from brush car washes.
Why did 9H become a marketing headline?
Because it is short, sounds scientific and is easy to print. Once one brand used it, others followed, and today a low-cost spray and a professional two-layer coating can carry the same badge.
Some manufacturers have moved away from it. Gtechniq, for example, describes Crystal Serum Ultra as a hard top layer over a slightly softer base layer that bonds to the paint, and says this construction resists swirls better than regular 9H coatings.
What matters more than hardness?
Preparation, product choice, installer skill and aftercare decide how well a coating performs. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so applying it over swirls or holograms simply preserves them under a glossy layer.
| Factor | Why it matters | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Paint preparation | The coating bonds to clean, corrected paint and preserves its condition | Is decontamination and paint correction included? |
| Product and layers | Durability and slickness vary by product and system | Which exact product and top coat will be used? |
| Application environment | Dust, heat and humidity affect levelling and curing | Is the car coated indoors in a controlled bay? |
| Curing and aftercare | Early washing or harsh chemicals shorten life | How long before the first wash, and with what? |
| Accreditation | Some professional coatings are sold only to trained installers | Is the installer accredited by the coating brand? |
Our guide on how paint is prepared before ceramic coating explains the preparation stage in detail.
If I want scratch and chip protection, what should I choose?
Choose paint protection film for impact protection and a ceramic coating for gloss and easy cleaning. PPF is a thick urethane film; XPEL lists an 8 mil (203 micron) urethane layer for ULTIMATE PLUS 10, and many films can self-heal light swirls with heat. A ceramic coating is measured in microns and cannot do that job.
Many Dubai owners combine both: PPF on the front end or full body, then a coating on the remaining paint, wheels and glass. Our comparison of PPF and ceramic coating and our guide to ceramic coating over PPF explain how they work together.
How does Apex Detail Studio choose and apply a coating?
Every coating job at our Al Quoz studio follows the same sequence.
- Inspection. We check the paint under studio lighting with you and agree what you want from the coating.
- Wash and decontamination. Iron fallout, tar and bonded contamination are removed.
- Paint correction. Swirls and marring are polished out to the level agreed, so they are not sealed in.
- Panel wipe. Polishing oils are removed so the coating can bond to bare clear coat.
- Application and levelling. The selected Gtechniq product is applied panel by panel indoors, then checked for high spots.
- Curing and handover. The car stays with us while the coating cures, and we explain aftercare before you leave.
Pricing depends on the car, its condition and the product, so we quote after inspection or through the estimate builder. Our guide to ceramic coating cost in Dubai explains what drives the price.

Frequently asked questions
What does 9H mean in ceramic coating?
9H is the highest grade on the pencil hardness scale. It means the cured coating resisted being marked by a 9H pencil in a controlled test. It does not mean the car is scratch proof or protected from stone chips.
Is a 9H ceramic coating harder than glass?
Not in any meaningful sense for car owners. The pencil scale and mineral hardness scales measure different things, so treat that claim with caution.
Will a 9H coating stop stone chips?
No. Stone chips are impact damage, and a ceramic coating is far too thin to absorb them. Paint protection film is the product designed for chip protection, often combined with a coating on top.
Are all 9H coatings the same?
No. Products with the same 9H claim can differ widely in chemistry, layers, durability and slickness. The exact product, the preparation and the installer matter much more than the badge.
Can a ceramic coating still get swirl marks?
Yes. Poor washing technique, dirty mitts and brush car washes can still mark a coated car, although a good coating makes washing easier and can reduce light marring. Correct contact washing is still essential.
How much does ceramic coating cost at Apex Detail Studio?
We do not publish a fixed price because it depends on the car, its condition, the level of correction and the product chosen. Send your model on WhatsApp or use the estimate builder, and we confirm the price after inspection.
