Why do owners put ceramic coating over PPF?

Does ceramic coating replace PPF?
No. Ceramic coating does not replace PPF. A coating is a very thin layer that cannot absorb a stone impact, so a coated car without film will still chip. PPF is a thick urethane film designed to take that impact instead of the paint.

Does the finish of the film change the coating choice?
Yes. Gloss and satin film need different handling. On gloss film, the coating should keep the surface clear and glossy without leaving high spots or streaks.
On satin or matte film, the coating must not add gloss or create uneven shiny patches. That means choosing a product made for matte finishes and applying it carefully. When should ceramic coating be applied over PPF?
Coating goes on after the film is installed, settled and prepared according to the coating system’s instructions. Applying coating over moisture, residue or contamination seals in a poor result.
Many owners have film and coating done in one visit, with the coating applied once the film is ready. If your car already has film, it can be coated later after a thorough wash, decontamination and inspection of the edges. What can ceramic coating not do on PPF?
Coating improves the surface. It does not improve the protection or the installation underneath.
- It cannot stop a stone from cutting or marking the film.
- It cannot reseal lifted edges or fix bubbles, dust or poor alignment.
- It does not automatically extend the film warranty; film and coating warranties have separate terms.
- It does not make the car maintenance-free. Water beading does not mean the surface is clean.
- It cannot fix yellowing or staining already in the film.
