How Paint Is Prepared Before Ceramic Coating

The preparation steps a car goes through before ceramic coating, and why they decide how good the finished coating looks and lasts.

Share on WhatsApp 8 Oct 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: Ceramic coating paint preparation means getting the clear coat completely clean, smooth and free of oils before the coating touches it. A proper process covers a thorough wash, chemical decontamination for iron and tar, clay or mechanical decontamination, paint correction to remove swirls and marring, and a final panel wipe to strip polishing residue. Because a coating bonds to the surface and locks in its condition, any defect left behind is preserved under a glossy layer. Preparation usually takes longer than the coating itself, and it is the main reason professional results differ.

Key facts

  • Why it matters: a coating preserves the paint as it is on the day it goes on, defects included.
  • Decontamination: iron fallout, tar and bonded grime are removed chemically and with clay or similar tools.
  • Correction: machine polishing removes swirls and light marring; deep scratches may need paint repair instead.
  • Panel wipe: polishing oils must be removed so the coating bonds to bare clear coat.
  • Where Apex does it: indoors at our Al Quoz studio, by a Gtechniq accredited team.

Two cars can receive the same ceramic coating and look completely different a week later. One shows deep, clear reflections. The other has a glossy layer over the same circular swirl marks it arrived with. The difference is almost always preparation.

In Dubai, preparation also has to deal with local conditions: fine sand embedded in the clear coat, iron fallout from braking and construction areas, tar from summer roads and water spots from hard water and sprinklers. This guide walks through each stage, what it achieves and what you should ask an installer about it.

Why does paint preparation matter before ceramic coating?

Preparation matters because a ceramic coating is designed to bond to the clear coat and stay there. Gtechniq describes the base layer of Crystal Serum Ultra as chemically bonding to the substrate, which is exactly why the surface must be right first.

If contamination sits on the paint, the coating bonds to the contamination instead and can fail early. If swirls are present, the coating fills nothing in the long term; it simply preserves them. Our guide to what 9H hardness really means explains why the coating itself is not a repair.

What are the main preparation steps?

A complete preparation follows five stages, each removing a different kind of problem.

Stage What it removes Typical method
Pre-wash and wash Loose sand, dust and road film Snow foam, pH neutral shampoo, careful contact wash
Chemical decontamination Iron fallout, tar, adhesive residue Iron remover and tar remover, rinsed thoroughly
Mechanical decontamination Bonded grime that survives washing Clay bar, clay mitt or similar, with lubricant
Paint correction Swirls, marring, light scratches, holograms Machine polishing in one or more stages
Panel wipe Polishing oils and residues Dedicated surface prep solution and clean microfibres

Trim, rubbers and sensitive areas are usually masked before polishing to avoid staining or burning edges.

How is the car washed and decontaminated?

The car is washed in stages so that grit is removed before anything touches the paint. In Dubai that matters more than usual, because fine sand acts like sandpaper under a wash mitt.

  1. Wheels, tyres and arches are cleaned first, so brake dust is not splashed onto clean paint.
  2. Snow foam is applied and rinsed to lift loose sand and dust.
  3. The body is hand washed with a pH neutral shampoo and clean mitts.
  4. An iron remover dissolves embedded brake and industrial fallout; the treated areas are rinsed.
  5. Tar and adhesive residue are removed with a dedicated solvent.
  6. The paint is clayed panel by panel to remove anything still bonded to it.

After this stage the paint should feel glass smooth. It may still look swirled, because decontamination cleans the surface but does not level it.

How much paint correction is needed before coating?

Enough to bring the paint to the condition you want preserved, and no more than the clear coat can safely give. Every polishing step removes a small amount of clear coat, so a good installer chooses the least aggressive method that achieves the agreed finish.

Paint condition Typical approach What to expect
New car, near perfect Light single-stage polish or refining step Removes dealer marks and boosts clarity
Light swirls from washing Single-stage correction Big visual improvement, minimal clear coat removed
Heavy swirls and marring Two-stage cut and refine Most defects removed; some deeper marks may remain
Deep scratches or clear coat failure Paint repair, not polishing Refinish first, coat after the new paint has cured

Brand-new cars are not exempt. Our guide on ceramic coating a brand-new car explains why many arrive with transport and dealer marks. If the clear coat is failing, our guide to clear coat failure explains the repair options.

What is a panel wipe and why is it essential?

A panel wipe is the final cleaning step that removes polishing oils, fillers and fingerprints, so the coating meets bare, clean clear coat. Many polishes contain lubricants that make paint look better temporarily and can block a coating from bonding properly.

The installer wipes each panel with a dedicated preparation solution and fresh microfibre towels, often inspecting under strong light at the same time. Skipping or rushing this step is a common cause of patchy beading and early failure.

How does Apex Detail Studio prepare a car for coating?

We follow the same documented process on every coating job at our 20,000 sq ft Al Quoz studio.

  1. Joint inspection. We look at the paint with you under studio lighting and record existing chips, scratches and repairs.
  2. Agree the finish. We explain what correction can achieve and what would need paint repair.
  3. Wash and decontaminate. Full wash, iron and tar removal, then clay.
  4. Mask and correct. Trim is protected and the paint is machine polished in the stages agreed.
  5. Inspect and wipe. Panels are checked under different lights, then panel wiped.
  6. Coat and cure. The selected Gtechniq product is applied indoors and left to cure before handover.

Pricing depends on the car’s size, condition and the level of correction, so we quote after inspection. Our guide to ceramic coating cost in Dubai explains the factors.

What should I ask an installer about preparation?

Ask for the preparation to be described in writing, because it is where low quotes usually save time.

  • Is chemical and mechanical decontamination included?
  • How many stages of paint correction are included, and on which panels?
  • Will deep scratches be polished, repaired or left as they are?
  • Is the car prepared and coated indoors, away from dust and direct sun?
  • Which exact product will be applied, and how long does it need to cure?

Our ceramic coating guide for Dubai covers the wider buying decision.

Frequently asked questions

Does a car need paint correction before ceramic coating?

In most cases, yes. A coating preserves the paint as it is, so swirls and marring left behind stay visible under the coating. The amount of correction depends on the paint’s condition and the finish you want.

Can a ceramic coating hide scratches?

Not reliably. Some products give a temporary filling effect, but a ceramic coating is not a repair. Scratches should be polished out before coating, and deep scratches may need paint repair.

Does a new car need preparation before coating?

Yes. New cars still need washing, decontamination and a panel wipe, and many benefit from light polishing to remove transport or dealer wash marks. We inspect the paint with you before confirming the scope.

What is a panel wipe?

A panel wipe is the final step before coating, using a dedicated solution to remove polishing oils and residues. It lets the coating bond directly to clean clear coat.

How long does preparation take?

It depends on the car’s size and condition. Preparation, especially correction, usually takes longer than applying the coating itself. We confirm timing after inspection.

Can freshly repaired paint be coated?

Yes, once the new paint has fully cured. Coating too early can interfere with curing, so we follow the paint system’s guidance on timing before preparing the panel.
