Should a Brand-New Car Receive Ceramic Coating?

Whether a brand-new car should be ceramic coated, what preparation new paint still needs and how coating fits with PPF.

Share on WhatsApp 8 Oct 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: Yes, a brand-new car is one of the best candidates for ceramic coating, because the paint has not yet collected years of wash marks and sun damage. New car ceramic coating adds gloss, makes sand and dust easier to wash off and helps resist bird droppings and water spots. New paint is not always perfect, though, so it still needs washing, decontamination and often light polishing first. A coating does not stop stone chips, so many owners pair it with PPF on the front or the whole car.

Key facts

  • Best timing: as soon as possible after delivery, before regular washing adds swirl marks.
  • Preparation: new cars can arrive with transport residue, dealer wash swirls and small marks that should be corrected first.
  • What it helps with: gloss, easier washing, resistance to bird droppings, sap and water spots.
  • What it does not do: stop stone chips, deep scratches or the need for safe washing.
  • Pairing: coating can be applied over PPF and on uncovered panels for one consistent finish.

A new car leaves the showroom with paint that will never look better without help. In Dubai, the first summer brings intense UV, sand blown across every road and hard water from washes, and within a few months many new cars already show light swirls and water marks on dark colours.

So should you coat a new car straight away? Usually yes, but the result depends on the product, the preparation and your expectations. This guide gives the honest version.

Is ceramic coating worth it on a brand-new car?

Ceramic coating is worth it on a new car if you want it to stay glossy and be easier to clean for years. You are protecting the paint at its best, rather than paying for heavy correction later to undo damage first.

The value is mostly practical. Coated paint sheds dust and water more easily, so washes are quicker and gentler, which in turn means fewer wash marks. It also gives you more time to remove bird droppings and similar contamination before they etch the clearcoat. Our article on bird droppings and paint damage explains why that matters in the heat.

Does new paint need preparation before coating?

Yes. New does not mean perfect. Cars are shipped, stored outdoors, moved around holding yards and washed at the dealer before handover. Any of that can leave marks that a coating would lock in.

  • Transport residue and adhesive from protective film.
  • Iron fallout from rail transport and storage near industrial areas.
  • Dealer wash swirls, most visible on black, dark blue and grey paint.
  • Small scratches or touch-ups from the delivery process.
  • Water spots from washing in the sun.

Preparation usually means a careful wash, chemical and clay decontamination, inspection under strong light and light polishing where needed. Heavy correction is rarely necessary on a new car. Our guide to paint preparation before coating covers each step.

What does ceramic coating protect a new car from?

Ceramic coating protects a new car mainly from the slow, everyday damage that dulls paint, not from impacts.

Threat Ceramic coating PPF
Dust and sand build-up Easier to rinse off Easier to clean if coated
Bird droppings and tree sap More time to remove before etching Film takes the damage instead of paint
Water spots Helps, but drying is still needed Helps, especially if coated
Light wash marks Some resistance, not immune Self-healing film can recover from light marks
Stone chips No meaningful protection Designed for this
UV and fading Adds a protective layer over the clearcoat Covers the paint with film

Should a new car get PPF, ceramic coating or both?

It depends on how you use the car. If it does daily highway miles, the front end will collect stone chips that no coating can stop, so PPF makes sense on at least the bumper, bonnet, wings and mirrors. If the car is mostly in the city and you want easy washing and gloss, ceramic coating alone may be enough.

Many owners choose both: PPF on the high-impact areas and ceramic coating over the film and the remaining paint. At Apex, full-body PPF starts from AED 11,000 with STEK and from AED 15,000 with XPEL on a sedan or coupe, before 5% VAT. Our new car PPF checklist and ceramic coating over PPF guides explain how the two work together.

How soon after delivery should a new car be coated?

As soon as you can, ideally before the car has been through regular washes. Every wash before coating is a chance to add swirls, especially at automatic or roadside washes.

If you are also fitting PPF, the film goes on first and the coating is applied afterwards. If the car came with a dealer protection product, ask exactly what was applied, because it may affect preparation. We can usually tell during the inspection whether a coating is present.

How does Apex Detail Studio coat a new car?

As a Gtechniq accredited studio, we follow the same documented sequence for every new car in our Al Quoz facility.

  1. Joint inspection. We walk round the car with you under studio lighting and note anything already on the paint.
  2. Wash and decontamination. Transport residue, iron fallout and bonded dirt are removed.
  3. Correction where needed. Dealer swirls and light marks are polished out so they are not sealed in.
  4. Panel wipe. Polishing oils are removed so the coating can bond properly.
  5. Coating application. The coating is applied panel by panel within its working time and levelled to avoid high spots.
  6. Curing and final check. The car cures under controlled conditions and is inspected before handover, with aftercare advice.

We discuss options such as Gtechniq’s professional Crystal Serum Ultra and the EXOv5 top layer, depending on the car and how it is used. Gtechniq’s Crystal Serum Ultra FAQ explains why it is only applied by accredited installers.

How long will the coating last, and what does it cost?

How long a coating lasts depends on the product, the preparation and above all how the car is washed. A coating that is washed safely and maintained will perform far longer than one put through harsh automatic washes. Our guide to how long ceramic coating lasts in Dubai goes into the details.

Coating price depends on the car size, the product, the surfaces covered and the preparation needed, so Apex does not publish a fixed figure. Read our ceramic coating cost guide, then send us your car details for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Does a brand-new car need ceramic coating?

It does not need it, but it is one of the best times to apply it. The paint is at its best and coating helps keep it glossy and easier to clean. Owners who wash at automatic washes or keep the car outdoors see the most benefit.

Does a new car need polishing before ceramic coating?

Often a light polish, yes. New cars can arrive with dealer wash swirls, transport marks or residue. We inspect the paint with you and only correct what needs it, because new paint rarely needs heavy polishing.

Can I coat a new car that already has PPF?

Yes. A suitable coating can go over the film and the uncovered paint, which makes the whole car easier to clean and gives a consistent finish. The film should be fully settled first.

Will ceramic coating stop stone chips on my new car?

No. A coating is far too thin to absorb stone impacts. PPF on the front end is the reliable way to stop chips, and many owners combine it with coating.

Is a dealer protection package the same as a professional ceramic coating?

Not necessarily. Dealer packages vary widely in product and preparation. Ask exactly what was applied and how the paint was prepared, and compare that with a professional coating before deciding.

How do I book new car ceramic coating at Apex?

Send your make, model, year and colour on WhatsApp, or use the estimate builder. We confirm preparation, product and timing after a quick inspection at our Al Quoz studio.
