Honesty matters here. If you plan to sell the car within a year and mainly want easier washing, a ceramic coating may be enough. PPF earns its cost over longer ownership.
Gloss or satin: should I put premium satin PPF on a Model Y?
Gloss film keeps the factory look. Both protect the paint the same way.
satin PPF is popular on Pearl White, where it gives a soft, frozen look, and on Stealth Grey and Quicksilver, where it makes the body lines stand out. It is also fully reversible: remove the film and the original gloss paint is underneath.
There are two trade-offs. Satin film needs satin-safe wash products, because waxes and gloss enhancers create patchy shine. And bird droppings should come off quickly, as they are more visible on a satin surface.
Does PPF interfere with Tesla cameras and Autopilot?
No, when it is installed correctly. Film is kept off camera lenses and cut cleanly around camera housings, so Autopilot and the visualisation keep working as normal.
Recent Model Ys rely on cameras rather than ultrasonic parking sensors. The cameras that matter for PPF are the side repeater cameras in the front wings, the rear camera above the number plate and, on newer cars, the front bumper camera. Each needs a precise opening in the pattern, with no film edge lifting near the lens.
