The Stelvio is Alfa Romeo’s luxury SUV, and its design leans heavily on the paint: the trilobe grille, the curved bonnet and the muscular shoulder line all rely on clean reflections to look right. Our job was to clean the car properly, correct the paint and then protect it, in that order. This is a different car and a different job from our Stelvio Quadrifoglio PPF and window tint build, which focused on film rather than detailing.

Why does a Stelvio need full detailing before ceramic coating?

A ceramic coating seals in whatever is on the paint, so detailing and correction must come first. Coating over swirls, contamination or oxidation would lock those defects in and give an uneven result.

Many owners see ceramic coating as a single product applied to the car. In practice, the coating step is short. The time goes into getting the paint perfectly clean and level so the coating bonds evenly across every panel. Skip that and the finish can look patchy, with the coating highlighting the very marks you wanted to hide.

On this Stelvio, the paint needed three things before coating: a thorough wash, decontamination to pull out bonded particles, and polishing to remove the swirls and oxidation. Once that was done, Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light had a clean surface to bond to.

We chose Crystal Serum Light because it forms a hard protective layer over the clear coat, resists chemicals and UV, and is strongly hydrophobic. In a city where the sun is intense for much of the year and fine dust lands on the car every day, that combination makes a real difference to how the car looks between washes.

How was the Stelvio detailed and coated?

We worked through four stages: a full wash, chemical and mechanical decontamination, paint correction, and the ceramic coating.

1. Exterior wash: we washed the whole car with a pH-neutral shampoo, including the wheel arches and tyres, to remove loose dirt without stripping or harming the surfaces.
2. Decontamination: we used an iron remover to dissolve embedded metal particles, then a clay bar to lift bonded contaminants such as tree sap. After this stage the paint felt smooth to the touch.
3. Paint correction and polishing: we machine polished the paint to remove swirl marks, scratches and oxidation and to bring back the depth of the gloss.
4. Ceramic coating: as the final step, we applied Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light to the corrected paint.

All of this happens in controlled bays inside our 20,000 sq ft studio in Al Quoz, where our in-house team can work away from dust and direct sun.
