How do you wash a car with paint protection film?

Wash a PPF car by hand: rinse thoroughly to lift sand, wash top to bottom with a pH-neutral shampoo and a clean microfibre mitt, rinse again, then dry with soft microfibre towels or filtered air. Never dry wipe a dusty car.

  1. Work in the shade. A hot panel dries shampoo and water onto the film and leaves spots. Early morning or evening is best in Dubai.
  2. Rinse first. Use plenty of water, or a pressure washer held at a sensible distance, to lift sand and dust before anything touches the surface.
  3. Pre-wash if the car is very dirty. A snow foam or pre-wash made for coated and filmed cars softens grime so the mitt has less to drag.
  4. Use two buckets. One with shampoo, one with clean water to rinse the mitt, so grit goes into the rinse bucket and not back onto the car.
  5. Wash top to bottom. Roof and glass first, lower panels and sills last, because that is where the heaviest grit sits.
  6. Rinse again before any shampoo dries.
  7. Dry gently. Use a large, clean microfibre drying towel and pat or glide, or blow water out of gaps with filtered air.

Why is washing PPF different from washing bare paint?

The routine is almost the same, but PPF has a self-healing topcoat and film edges that need a little care. Harsh chemicals can dull the topcoat, and high-pressure water or rough towels aimed at an edge can start to lift it.

On the positive side, film is easier to wash than bare paint. Its hydrophobic surface sheds water and lets dirt slide off with less effort, so washes are quicker and need less scrubbing. Light swirls that do appear in the topcoat usually fade with heat from the sun or warm water, which is the self-healing property at work. If you want to understand the layers involved, our guide to how PPF works explains them.

Washing is still the main way film wears. Sand dragged across the surface marks the topcoat in the same way it would mark paint, and chemicals that are fine for glass or wheels can stain film. Gentle technique keeps the film clear and glossy for much longer.

Which products are safe on PPF, and which should you avoid?

Use pH-neutral car shampoo, quick detailers and sealants that say they are safe on film, and clean microfibre towels. Avoid solvents, strong degreasers, abrasive polishes, compounds, and anything with harsh alkaline or acidic formulas.

Safe on PPF Avoid on PPF
pH-neutral car shampoo Dish soap and household cleaners
Snow foam or pre-wash made for coated cars Strong traffic film removers and degreasers on the film
Soft microfibre wash mitts and drying towels Brushes, sponges and old, gritty towels
Film-safe quick detailers and sealants Cutting compounds and abrasive polishes
Ceramic coating designed for film Solvent-based tar removers left to sit on the film

If a product does not say it is safe on film, test it on a small, low area first, or ask us before using it.

Can you take a PPF car through an automatic car wash?

We advise against brush-type automatic car washes. The brushes carry grit from previous cars and drag it across the film, and their force can stress the film edges. Hand washing or a touchless wash is the better choice.

Touchless washes are much safer because nothing physical touches the film, though some use strong chemicals to make up for the lack of contact. If you rely on a wash service, ask how they wash and what they use, and avoid aiming a pressure lance directly at film edges from close range. Many owners in Dubai use a mobile or building wash several times a week, so it is worth showing whoever washes your car what the film is and how it should be treated.

The same applies to hand car wash stations at petrol stations and malls. A rushed wash with one bucket and a shared sponge does more harm than a slightly dirty car.

How do you remove bird droppings, sap and tar from PPF?

Remove bird droppings and sap as soon as you see them: soften with a film-safe quick detailer or warm water for a minute, then lift gently with a clean microfibre. For tar, use a product that states it is safe on PPF and rinse it off promptly.

XPEL film resists stains from bird droppings, tree sap and road tar, but in Dubai heat these contaminants bake onto any surface quickly. Leaving them for days is what causes stubborn marks. Never scrape or scrub a dried dropping, because the grit in it scratches. Keep a small bottle of quick detailer and a clean microfibre in the car so you can deal with it on the same day.

How often should you wash PPF in Dubai?

For most cars in Dubai, a gentle wash every week or two is right, more often if the car is parked outdoors or after a sandstorm. Regular washing stops sand and contaminants sitting on the film, where heat and UV make them harder to remove.

Dubai’s climate puts more on a car than most places: UV that fades and oxidises, heat above 45C that bakes contaminants on, fine sand and dust, and urban pollution. Film handles all of this, but it works best when it is kept clean. Between washes, a light dusting with a dry cloth is not a good idea. Use a rinse or a waterless product made for film with plenty of clean microfibres instead.

A simple rhythm works for most owners. A full hand wash every week or two, a quick rinse after a dusty drive or a sandstorm, and spot cleaning of droppings and sap the same day. Once a month, take a closer look at the lower panels and the front end while you wash, because that is where sand and road grime build up and where any chips in the film will show first. If the car sits for long periods, a breathable indoor cover or a covered parking spot keeps dust off the film between washes.

Should you add ceramic coating on top of PPF?

Many owners do, and it makes washing easier still. A ceramic coating designed for film adds extra water beading, makes dirt release faster and adds gloss, while the film below carries on protecting the paint from chips and scratches.

We are Gtechniq accredited and can coat film, glass and wheels after the PPF is installed. If your car is coated, the wash routine is the same: pH-neutral shampoo, gentle technique and no harsh chemicals. Our guide to washing a ceramic coated car covers the extra details. Ceramic coating pricing depends on the car and the package; send your car details on WhatsApp for an exact quote.

When should PPF be inspected or replaced?

Look over the film every few weeks while you wash: check edges, the front bumper and the bonnet leading edge. If an edge is lifting, the film is torn, or you see cloudiness or yellowing, bring the car in so we can look at it before it spreads.

Damaged film can usually be fixed one panel at a time. We replaced the rear fender film on a McLaren 720S using XPEL DAP precut patterns, so no blades touched the paint and the car stayed scratch-free. That is one of the advantages of DAP precut PPF: a matching panel can be cut again whenever it is needed. If your film is discoloured, our article on PPF yellowing explains the causes.

How much does PPF cost in Dubai?

Full-body PPF at Apex Detail Studio starts from AED 12,000 for sedans and AED 13,500 for SUVs and trucks (colour PPF from AED 15,000), depending on options, before 5% VAT. The exact figure depends on the car, the film and the coverage you choose.

The film carries a manufacturer warranty, and our team explains the terms and the care routine when the car is handed back. You can see coverage options on our paint protection film service page, or send your car’s details on WhatsApp on +971 58 549 2739 for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can I wash my car after PPF is installed?

Give the film time to settle before the first wash. Our team tells you the exact waiting time for your car when we hand it back.

Can I use a pressure washer on PPF?

Yes, with care. Keep a sensible distance and do not aim the jet straight at film edges from close range.

Do I need to wax PPF?

No. Wax is not needed, but a film-safe sealant or a ceramic coating made for film can add gloss and water beading.

Can I polish PPF to remove scratches?

Do not use cutting compounds or abrasive polishes. Light marks usually self-heal with heat, and deeper damage needs the panel of film replaced.

Why are there water spots on my PPF?

Usually from washing in the sun or letting tap water dry on the surface. Wash in the shade and dry the car fully with microfibre.

Is a touchless car wash safe for PPF?

It is much safer than a brush wash. Check that the chemicals used are not overly harsh, and hand dry with clean microfibre afterwards.

What towels should I use to dry PPF?

Large, soft microfibre drying towels that are clean and only used on paint and film. Wash them separately without fabric softener so they stay absorbent.
