To wash a ceramic coated car, pre-rinse it to lift loose dirt, wash from the roof down with a microfibre mitt and pH neutral shampoo using two buckets, clean the wheels last, rinse thoroughly and pat it dry with microfibre. This is the routine we give every coated car leaving Apex Detail Studio in Al Quoz, Dubai, and it keeps the gloss and water beading working in UAE conditions.

Why does washing technique matter on a ceramic coated car?
Washing technique matters because the wrong products and tools can strip a ceramic coating’s hydrophobic (water repelling) properties or put fine scratches into it. The coating is tough, but it is a thin layer, and how you wash it decides how long it keeps working.
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds with the paint. Unlike wax or a sealant, it protects against UV rays, minor scratches, chemical stains and environmental pollutants, and it adds a high gloss finish. It also makes the car easier to clean, because dirt has a harder time sticking to it.
That ease of cleaning is exactly why gentle washing works so well. You do not need strong chemicals or hard scrubbing. What you do need is to avoid the things that wear the coating down: household detergents, abrasive sponges, gritty mitts and automatic brushes. Bird droppings and tree sap left on the paint will also slowly degrade the coating, so regular washing is part of protecting it.
What do you need to wash a ceramic coated car?
You need two buckets, a pH neutral car shampoo, microfibre wash mitts, soft microfibre drying towels, a pressure washer or foam cannon for the pre-rinse, and a separate wheel cleaner and tyre brush. That is the whole kit.
- Two buckets. One for soapy water, one for rinsing the mitt.
- pH neutral car shampoo. Cleans without stripping the coating.
- Microfibre wash mitts. Soft, deep pile mitts hold dirt away from the paint.
- Microfibre drying towels. Plush and clean, kept only for paintwork.
- Pressure washer or foam cannon. For a thorough pre-rinse that lifts loose dirt before you touch the car.
- Wheel cleaner and tyre brush. Kept separate so brake dust never reaches the paint.
Keep your paint towels and mitts apart from anything used on wheels, and wash them without fabric softener so they stay absorbent and soft.
How do you wash a ceramic coated car step by step?
Pre-rinse, prepare two buckets, wash from the roof down in straight lines, do the wheels last, rinse thoroughly, then dry straight away. Here is each step in detail.
- Pre-rinse the whole car. Use a pressure washer or foam cannon to remove loose dirt and sand. In Dubai this is the most important step, because the sand on the surface is what scratches paint when a mitt touches it.
- Prepare two buckets. Fill one with water and pH neutral shampoo. Fill the second with clean water for rinsing the mitt.
- Wash from the top down. Start with the roof and work down in sections. Use straight, overlapping strokes rather than circles, and rinse the mitt in the clean bucket after each panel. The lower panels are the dirtiest, so they come last.
- Clean the wheels and tyres last. Use a dedicated wheel cleaner and brush, so brake dust and road grime are not carried onto clean paint.
- Rinse thoroughly. Make sure no shampoo residue is left in panel gaps, around badges or under mirrors.
- Dry immediately. Pat the car dry with a soft microfibre towel rather than rubbing.
The whole routine is quicker on a coated car than on bare paint, because the dirt releases with very little effort.

How should you dry a ceramic coated car?
Dry a ceramic coated car straight after rinsing by patting it with a soft, clean microfibre towel, never by leaving it to air dry. Air drying leaves water spots and streaks, which in Dubai can etch into the surface.
On a coated car most of the water runs off on its own, so drying is quick. Lay the towel flat on the panel, pat or gently drag it, and turn it to a dry side as it gets wet. Avoid pressing hard or scrubbing. Check mirrors, door shuts and the area under the boot lid, because water collects there and runs out later, leaving streaks on a panel you have already dried.
If you have a blower, use it for grilles, badges and wheels, where towels cannot reach.
Should you use a ceramic boost spray after washing?
A ceramic boost spray after washing is optional but worthwhile. It refreshes the hydrophobic layer, adds shine and adds a little extra protection on top of the coating.
Think of it as a top up rather than a repair. The base coating is designed to last for years, so you do not need to reapply the coating after a wash. A booster simply restores the slickness and tight water beading that fade as the surface collects fine contamination. Apply it to a clean, dry, cool panel, spread it evenly and buff it off with a fresh microfibre towel.
For how often to boost, decontaminate and inspect a coating in Dubai, see our ceramic coating maintenance schedule.

How do you remove bird droppings, sap and water spots from a coated car?
Remove bird droppings, tree sap and fresh water spots as soon as you see them: soften them with water or a pH neutral detail spray, let it dwell for a minute, then lift them off gently with a soft microfibre towel. Never scrape or scrub.
In Dubai heat these contaminants are the biggest everyday threat to a coating. Bird droppings are acidic and bake onto hot paint, and tree sap hardens quickly. The coating gives you time, because the contamination sits on the coating instead of the clear coat, but left for days they will start to degrade it.
Keep a small bottle of detail spray and a clean microfibre towel in the car. Spray, wait, then fold the towel and lift the mark away in one direction. If something will not come off with gentle pressure, leave it and ask us to look at it. Water spots that have already etched need a professional to remove them safely, so the coating is not polished away with them.
What washing mistakes damage a ceramic coating?
The mistakes that damage a ceramic coating most are household detergents, skipping the pre-rinse, abrasive towels or sponges, letting the car air dry, automatic car washes and washing in direct sunlight.
- Household detergents such as washing up liquid strip the coating and dull the finish.
- Skipping the pre-rinse means the mitt drags sand across the paint, causing micro scratches.
- Abrasive towels and sponges scratch the surface. Use microfibre only.
- Air drying leaves water spots and streaks.
- Automatic car washes use abrasive brushes and harsh chemicals.
- Washing in direct sun dries the soap too fast and causes streaks. Wash in shade, early morning or after sunset.
We cover these and other habits that cut a coating’s performance in our article on ceramic coating aftercare mistakes.

How often should you wash a ceramic coated car in Dubai?
Wash a ceramic coated car about every two weeks in Dubai. That stops dirt building up and keeps the coating’s hydrophobic properties working.
Wash sooner after a sandstorm, after rain (which in Dubai brings dust down with it) or when bird droppings or tree sap land on the paint. Those contaminants should come off the same day, not at the next scheduled wash. Between washes, a light rinse with water is far better than wiping dust off with a dry cloth.
If you would rather not do it yourself, we offer coating safe maintenance washes at the studio. You can read more about the coatings we apply on our ceramic coating service page.
Can you take a ceramic coated car through an automatic car wash?
No. We advise against automatic car washes for coated cars, because their brushes are abrasive and the chemicals they use are often harsh enough to wear the coating down.
Brush washes are the worst offenders. The brushes carry grit from every car before yours and drag it across the paint, which leaves swirl marks in the coating. If a hand wash is not possible, a touchless wash is the lesser evil, but a gentle hand wash remains the best way to look after a coating. If you want to understand why the surface behaves the way it does, our ceramic coating Dubai guide explains what the coating can and cannot handle.

Frequently asked questions
What shampoo is safe for a ceramic coated car?
A pH neutral car shampoo. Avoid household detergents and washing up liquid, which strip the coating.
Can I wash my ceramic coated car in the sun?
It is best not to. In direct sun the soap dries too fast and leaves streaks and water spots. Wash in shade, early in the morning or after sunset.
Do I need to reapply ceramic coating after washing?
No. The coating is designed to last for years. A ceramic boost spray can refresh the water beading and gloss between maintenance visits.
Is a pressure washer safe on a ceramic coating?
Yes, used sensibly for the pre-rinse and final rinse. Keep a sensible distance from the paint and avoid aiming at panel edges and badges at close range.
Can I use a waterless wash on a ceramic coated car?
Only for light dust, with plenty of product and clean microfibre towels. If the car is sandy, rinse it with water first, because wiping sand off dry causes scratches.
Should I wash the wheels first or last?
Last, with a separate wheel cleaner, brush and mitt, so brake dust and road grime never reach the paint.
How soon after coating can I wash my car?
We tell you the exact waiting period at handover, because it depends on the coating and how it was cured.
