Alloy-Wheel Refinishing: Colour, Preparation and Durability

How alloy wheels are properly refinished, from kerb rash repair and preparation to colour choice, diamond-cut faces and long-term durability.

Share on WhatsApp 8 Oct 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: A durable alloy wheel paint job depends on preparation more than colour. The tyre and weights normally come off, old coatings and corrosion are removed, kerb damage is repaired and smoothed, and the bare alloy is primed before colour and clearcoat go on. Diamond-cut faces need a lathe rather than paint alone, and brake heat, harsh wheel cleaners and Dubai sun all test the finish. Done properly and cleaned with gentle products, a refinished wheel should look right for years.

Key facts

  • Preparation: old paint, corrosion and kerb damage must be dealt with before any colour goes on.
  • Colour: silver, gunmetal, black and satin finishes can be matched, but each wheel design suits some finishes better than others.
  • Diamond-cut wheels: the bright machined face needs a lathe re-cut and clear lacquer, not just paint.
  • Durability threats: brake dust, heat, acidic wheel cleaners and kerbs.
  • Protection: ceramic coating on wheels makes brake dust easier to wash off.

Dubai’s kerbs are not kind to wheels. Tall pavements in car parks, tight drive-through lanes and low-profile tyres on 21 and 22 inch rims mean kerb rash is one of the most common cosmetic complaints we see on SUVs and performance cars.

Wheels also live in a harsh environment: hot brake dust, sand, road grime and strong cleaners at quick car washes. Poor preparation shows within months. This guide explains what a proper refinish involves and how to make it last.

What does alloy wheel refinishing involve?

Alloy wheel refinishing means stripping or sanding back the damaged finish, repairing the alloy and recoating it with primer, colour and clearcoat. It is closer to a small paint job than a quick touch-up.

Stage What happens Why it matters
Assessment Check for cracks, bends, corrosion and previous repairs Structural damage must be handled by a wheel specialist, not hidden under paint
Removal Tyre, valve, weights and TPMS sensor are removed where needed Paint can go on cleanly and sensors are not damaged
Stripping and cleaning Old coating, corrosion and contamination are removed New paint only lasts if it bonds to clean, sound alloy
Damage repair Kerb rash is sanded, filled where suitable and smoothed The rim edge looks straight and even after paint
Primer, colour and clear Compatible undercoat, basecoat and clearcoat are applied and cured Adhesion, colour depth and resistance to cleaners and UV
Refit and balance Tyre refitted, wheel balanced, sensors checked Smooth driving and correct tyre pressure readings

Why is preparation so important for wheel paint?

Wheel paint fails when it is applied over contamination, corrosion or loose old coating. Brake dust embeds itself in the surface, and alloy oxidation lifts paint from underneath, often at the rim edge.

Proper preparation removes that layer so the primer can bond to clean metal. Kerb damage also has to be blended smoothly into the rim profile. A gouge simply filled with paint will show as a dip or a ridge as soon as light catches the edge.

Cracks and bends are a different issue. A cracked or bent wheel is a safety matter, and should be assessed by a wheel repair specialist or replaced, not painted over.

Which colours and finishes work for alloy wheels?

Most wheels can be refinished in their original colour or changed to a new one. The common options are:

  • Factory silver or hyper silver: the most forgiving for small marks, and matched using the original colour as a reference.
  • Gunmetal and grey metallics: popular on SUVs, and good at hiding brake dust between washes.
  • Gloss black: striking but shows swirl marks and dust quickly, especially on dark cars.
  • Satin and matte black: a modern look that hides fine marks but needs gentle cleaning products.
  • Bronze, gold and custom colours: possible, but best tested on a sample before committing to a full set.

Colour matching uses the same principles as body paint: a reference, a formula and a test spray compared on the actual wheel. Our colour matching guide explains why a test card matters more than the code alone.

Can diamond-cut wheels be painted?

Not in the usual way. Diamond-cut wheels have a bright, machined alloy face, often with fine circular lines, protected by a clear lacquer. Paint cannot recreate that finish.

Restoring the original look normally means painting the wheel’s darker sections, then re-machining the face on a specialist lathe and applying a fresh clear lacquer. Each re-cut removes a small amount of metal, so a wheel cannot be re-cut indefinitely. If you are happy to change the look, a diamond-cut wheel can also be painted a solid colour all over. We will explain the options and point you to the right route for your wheel.

How long does refinished wheel paint last in Dubai?

A properly prepared and cured refinish should last for years, but how long it looks good depends heavily on how the wheels are treated. The biggest threats are mechanical damage and harsh chemicals rather than the sun alone.

  • Kerbs will damage any finish, however good.
  • Acidic or very strong wheel cleaners used at some quick washes can dull clearcoat and attack bare edges.
  • Brake dust left baked on for weeks bonds to the surface and is harder to remove without scrubbing.
  • Heat from hard braking stresses the finish near the hub, which is why proper curing matters.

Washing wheels regularly with a pH-neutral cleaner and soft brushes does more for durability than anything else.

How does Apex Detail Studio refinish alloy wheels?

Wheel refinishing at our Al Quoz studio uses the same professional PPG refinish system and the same checks as our body paint work.

  1. Inspect. We check each wheel for kerb damage, corrosion, cracks and previous repairs, and flag anything structural.
  2. Agree the finish. Original colour, a new colour, or a diamond-cut route, confirmed before work starts.
  3. Prepare. Old coating and corrosion are removed and kerb damage is repaired and smoothed.
  4. Paint. Compatible primer, basecoat and clearcoat are applied and fully cured.
  5. Refit and check. Tyres refitted and balanced, sensors checked and the finish inspected in daylight.

Pricing depends on wheel size, design, damage and finish, so we quote per set after seeing the wheels or clear photos on WhatsApp. Our guide to car paint repair in Dubai explains what affects refinish pricing more generally.

How can I protect newly refinished wheels?

Once the new finish has cured, ceramic coating for wheels and calipers is the most useful protection. It does not stop kerb rash, but it makes brake dust and grime much easier to rinse off, so you scrub less and the clearcoat lasts longer.

Many owners combine a wheel refinish with ceramic coating on the body or paint protection film on the front end, so the whole car is protected at once.

Frequently asked questions

Can kerb rash on alloy wheels be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. Scuffs and gouges on the rim edge are sanded, filled where suitable and smoothed before the wheel is primed and painted. Cracked or bent wheels need a wheel specialist or replacement instead.

Do the tyres need to come off to paint alloy wheels?

For a proper refinish, usually yes. Removing the tyre, weights and sensor lets the whole wheel be prepared and painted cleanly, and the wheel is balanced again after refitting.

Can I change the colour of my alloy wheels?

Yes. Wheels can be refinished in silver, gunmetal, gloss or satin black and many custom colours. We recommend seeing a test spray before committing to an unusual colour on a full set.

Can diamond-cut wheels be refinished?

Yes, but the bright face needs to be re-machined on a lathe and lacquered, rather than painted. Each re-cut removes a little metal. Alternatively, the wheel can be painted a solid colour if you are happy to change the look.

How long does wheel paint last?

A properly prepared and cured finish should last for years. Kerbs, harsh wheel cleaners and baked-on brake dust shorten its life, so gentle, regular cleaning matters most.

Is ceramic coating worth it on refinished wheels?

Yes for most owners. It makes brake dust and grime easier to wash off, which reduces scrubbing. It does not protect against kerb damage.
