Why does matte paint look different from gloss?

Matte paint looks different because its surface is microscopically rough, so light scatters in many directions instead of reflecting back cleanly. A gloss clearcoat is levelled smooth, which is what gives it a mirror-like reflection.

Satin sits between the two, with a soft sheen rather than a flat look. The colour underneath can be identical, but the texture and gloss level of the top layer change how it appears, which is why sheen matters as much as colour in a repair.

Why should matte paint not be polished?

Matte paint should not be polished because polishing works by levelling the surface, and levelling a matte surface makes it shiny. The result is a patch that reflects light differently from the rest of the panel, and it cannot be turned back into matte by more polishing.

The same applies to compounds, glazes, scratch-removal products and many waxes. Car wash brushes and harsh scrubbing can also burnish the texture over time.

Can a matte scratch be touched up?

A small chip in matte paint can sometimes be sealed with a careful touch-up to protect the panel underneath, but the repair will usually still be visible. On gloss paint a touch-up is levelled and polished flush; on matte paint that final polishing step is not possible.

Can a small area of matte paint be blended?

Matte paint should be hand washed with a matte-safe, pH-neutral shampoo and clean microfibre, without polishes, waxes or glazes. Contamination such as bird droppings and bug splatter should be removed quickly and gently, because it is harder to correct on matte paint.
