G63 desert protection starts with full body PPF, because sand, gravel and wadi stones hit the lower doors, flares, bumpers and bonnet first, and a G-Class panel is expensive to respray. Film takes that damage so the factory paint survives every trip. At Apex Detail Studio in Dubai, full PPF for SUVs starts from AED 13,500 before 5% VAT.

G63 desert protection at a glance
- Biggest risk areas: lower doors and side steps, arch flares, front bumper, bonnet edge, mirrors.
- Best protection: full body PPF (SUVs from AED 13,500 before VAT).
- Spare wheel cover and tailgate: filmed too, they catch sand thrown from the rear tyres.
- After every trip: rinse thoroughly before any contact wash.
- Yearly: film inspection with our PPF maintenance package.

Why does desert driving damage a G63’s paint?
Sand is abrasive and moves fast. When tyres throw sand and small stones, it sandblasts the lower body and chips the clear coat, sometimes in a single trip.
The G-Class is built for this terrain, and owners use it: dune drives, Hatta tracks and camping in the desert. Each brings different damage:
- Dunes: fine sand blasting the lower doors, side steps and rear quarters, and packing into panel gaps and hinges.
- Gravel tracks: stone chips on the bumper, arch flares and the leading edge of the bonnet.
- Wadis and camping: branch scratches along the doors and mirrors.
- Sun at camp: UV and heat on the roof, bonnet and tailgate.

Which parts of a G63 need the most protection off-road?
The lower third of the car and the front end, closest to the tyres and facing the direction of travel.
| Area | Main threat | Why film helps |
|---|---|---|
| Front bumper and bonnet edge | Stone chips | Absorbs impact before it reaches paint |
| Arch flares and quarters | Sand blasting from tyres | Sacrificial, replaceable layer |
| Lower doors and side steps area | Sand and gravel spray | Keeps clear coat from dulling |
| Doors and mirrors | Branch scratches | Self-healing top layer recovers from light marks |
| Spare wheel cover and tailgate | Rear tyre spray | Covered as part of full body film |
Because damage lands everywhere, we recommend full body film rather than a front only kit on a G-Class that goes off-road.

Is PPF strong enough for the dunes?
PPF is the strongest practical protection for paint, but it is a sacrificial layer, not armour. It takes the sand and chips so the paint does not, and a worn section of film can be replaced panel by panel without touching the paint.
What film will not stop is a hard impact, such as a rock strike. For that, careful driving matters more than any coating. Our white 2025 G500 build covers how film holds up on a G-Class used off-road.
Does a matte G63 work off-road?
Yes. Matte film protects as well as gloss and hides light dust between washes, but it needs matte safe products and must never be polished. See our G63 matte PPF guide.
How should I wash a G63 after a desert trip?
Rinse first, touch later. Most wash scratches come from rubbing sand across the paint.
- Rinse thoroughly: start with the lower body, flares, hinges and panel gaps, where sand collects.
- Pre wash foam: let it dwell to lift remaining grit, then rinse again.
- Contact wash gently: pH neutral shampoo, a clean soft mitt and two buckets.
- Check edges and hinges: make sure no sand is trapped along film edges, door hinges or the spare wheel cover.
- Dry with soft towels: never drag sand across the surface.

If sand gets into the engine bay, our dry ice cleaning is a deep clean option; see dry ice versus steam cleaning. Our yearly PPF maintenance package includes a film inspection, hydrophobic refresh, hand wash and detail, and a UV check.
What else should a G63 owner protect before off-roading?
Window tint keeps the cabin cooler while the car is parked at camp, and interior film keeps grit off the carbon trim and screens. Read our new G63 protection guide for the full list and the G63 PPF cost guide for prices. For off-road SUVs in general, see PPF for off-road SUVs.

What Mercedes-AMG G63 owners say
Frequently asked questions
Does PPF protect a G63 from desert sand?
Yes. Full body PPF absorbs sand blasting and stone chips on the lower doors, flares, bumpers and bonnet, so the factory paint stays intact.
Which parts of a G63 get damaged most off-road?
The front bumper, bonnet edge, arch flares, lower doors, mirrors and the area around the spare wheel.
Is a front only PPF kit enough for a G63 that goes off-road?
We recommend full body film, because sand and branches damage the sides and rear as well as the front.
How much is full PPF on a G63?
Full PPF for SUVs starts from AED 13,500 before 5% VAT at Apex Detail Studio, depending on options.
How do I wash sand off a G63 with PPF?
Rinse thoroughly, use a pre wash foam, then wash gently with pH neutral shampoo and a soft mitt. Never rub dry sand across the film.
Can damaged PPF be replaced after a desert trip?
Yes. Worn or damaged film can be replaced panel by panel without touching the paint.
