Paint protection film (PPF) is a clear, self-healing urethane film applied over paint to absorb stone chips, sand and scuffs. On most SUVs, the hard part is the curves. On a G-Class, the hard part is everything that interrupts the panels.
Dubai has more G-Classes per kilometre than almost anywhere, from G 500s on the Jumeirah school run to G 63s heading for Al Qudra and the dunes. The shape that makes the G iconic also makes it vulnerable. The upright front takes stones head-on, the flat doors scuff in tight car parks, and fine desert sand gets blasted along the sills and arch flares at highway speed.
Most poor G-Class installs look fine from three metres. The problems show up close: around hinges, handles, trims, corners and the narrow painted strips. This guide covers exactly where those areas are and how they should be handled.
Why is the G-Class so difficult to wrap with PPF?
Because almost every panel is interrupted by hardware. Visible hinges, external handles, indicator pods, flares, trims and the spare wheel break the surface, and each interruption is a place where film must end cleanly and stay down.

Will the hinges and hardware be removed for PPF?
Only where it gives a better and safer result. Dismantling decisions depend on condition, access and the agreed scope, and they should be explained before work starts.
Removing some parts lets film run behind them, so the edge is hidden and less likely to lift. But every removal has a risk: clips, seals and fixings on a high-value car need to go back perfectly. In many places, a precisely cut and sealed edge around the hardware is the better choice. Ask your installer which areas will be removed, which will be cut around, and why.
Is every film edge hidden on a G-Class?
No, and an honest installer will say so. Safe and durable finishing takes priority over forcing every edge behind hardware. Forced edges are the ones that lift after a few months of Dubai heat and washing.
Expect visible but neat edges at some hinge points, along narrow strips beside trims and at the spare wheel carrier. What you should not see are bubbles, dust specks, jagged cuts, overstretched film or blade marks on the paint.
Can matte G-Class paint be protected?
Yes. satin PPF can also turn a gloss G-Class satin.
Matte paint cannot be polished like gloss paint, so scratches on an unprotected matte G-Class are expensive and often mean a respray. That makes the case for film stronger on matte cars than on any other finish. Satin-safe wash products are needed afterwards to avoid patchy shine.
What about AMG, side steps and special editions?
AMG and special edition parts change the plan. Carbon parts, stripes, badges, side exhausts and body packages are all inspected first, and the pattern is built around your exact car.
- Side steps. Painted or gloss surfaces on steps may be suitable after inspection. Treads that take boots are usually left alone.
- Carbon trim. Gloss carbon takes clear film; satin carbon suits satin PPF.
- Stripes and badges. Usually covered, after discussing appearance and future removal.
- Off-road use. Regular dune trips justify premium gloss PPF for thicker film.

The film manufacturer provides it. Premium gloss PPF and satin PPF carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, blistering and delamination, per published warranty terms.
