PPF Quality-Control Checklist: What to Inspect Before Collection

PPF Quality-Control Checklist: What to Inspect Before Collection

A practical checklist for inspecting paint protection film before you collect your car, from edges and seams to coverage and warranty paperwork.

Share on WhatsApp 8 Oct 2026 · 6 min read

Quick answer: Before you collect a car after PPF installation, inspect it in good light with the installer: check that edges are wrapped or neatly finished, corners are not lifting, seams and relief cuts sit where agreed, and there is no trapped dust, hair or large bubbles. Confirm the coverage matches your quote panel by panel, that sensors and lights work, and that you have the warranty card, receipt and aftercare instructions. Small moisture spots can be normal for a few days while the film settles.

Key facts

  • Light: inspect under studio lighting or daylight, never in a dark car park.
  • Edges: wrapped where safe, or cut cleanly and consistently, with no lifting corners.
  • Contamination: no large dust specks, hairs or sand trapped under the film.
  • Coverage: every panel on the quote, with seams and relief cuts where agreed.
  • Paperwork: warranty card, receipt and aftercare instructions, which manufacturer warranties require.

Most PPF problems are easy to spot on collection day and much harder to fix weeks later, after the car has been washed, driven and parked in the sun. A lifted corner that is caught at handover can be redone in minutes. The same corner found a month later may already be full of sand.

Use this checklist whether your car was filmed at Apex or anywhere else in Dubai. It covers what to look at, what is normal while the film settles, and what you should raise with the installer before you drive away.

When and where should I inspect PPF?

Inspect PPF before you leave the installer’s premises, in good light, with the installer walking round with you. Studio lighting or bright daylight shows edges and dust clearly; a dark basement car park hides almost everything.

Allow 15 to 20 minutes. Look at each panel from several angles, crouch to see lower edges, and open doors, the bonnet and the boot where film wraps inside.

What should I check on the edges and corners?

Edges and corners are where PPF usually fails first, so check them closely. They should be wrapped around the panel where it is safe to do so, or cut cleanly and evenly where wrapping is not possible.

  • Wrapped edges: film tucked around bonnet, door and boot edges, with no white or cloudy lines.
  • Cut edges: straight, consistent gaps from the panel edge, with no jagged trimming.
  • Corners: flat and stuck down, with no lifting at bumper corners, mirror edges or arch lips.
  • Badges and emblems: film neatly around or under them, without stretched or torn areas.
  • Knife marks: ask how the film was trimmed on the car; hand trimming should never leave cuts in the paint.

Our guide on pre-cut versus hand-cut PPF explains how patterns and trimming affect edges.

Which visual defects should I look for?

Look for anything trapped under the film and any distortion in the surface. Some marks are normal for a few days; others are installation faults that should be fixed before you leave.

What you see Normal while settling? What to do
Small moisture spots or slight haze Yes, usually clears within days as the film dries Monitor; avoid washing for the first few days
Large air bubbles No Ask the installer to fix before collection
Dust specks, hair or sand under the film No, if obvious at normal viewing distance Raise it; the panel may need re-doing
Stretch marks or distortion lines No Usually caused by overstretching; ask for the panel to be redone
Lifting edge or corner No Fix before you leave
Yellow or cloudy film on day one No Question the film used

If something appears in the weeks after collection, our guide to PPF yellowing, peeling and lifting explains likely causes.

How do I check the coverage matches my quote?

Check the coverage panel by panel against your written quote. Two full-front packages from different shops can include different panels, so the quote is the only reliable reference.

  1. Take the quote with you and tick off each panel as you inspect it.
  2. Check headlights, mirrors, A-pillars, roof edges and sills, which are often left out.
  3. Look for seams on large panels like the bonnet and confirm they sit where you agreed.
  4. Confirm the film type and finish, gloss or satin, is what you paid for.
  5. Check interior film, if ordered, on screens and trim.

If you are still choosing, our new-car PPF checklist and guide to the best PPF installer in Dubai list what to agree before booking.

What should work and what paperwork should I receive?

Before driving away, check that every sensor, camera, light and moving part works as it did before, and that you have the documents the warranty depends on.

  • Parking sensors, cameras and radar give no new warnings.
  • Headlights, indicators and washer jets work normally.
  • Doors, bonnet, boot and fuel flap open and close without catching film.
  • Warranty card or registration, with the film brand and line named.
  • Receipt showing the film, coverage and date.
  • Aftercare instructions, written or sent on WhatsApp.

XPEL states that its warranty requires professional installation with a warranty card and receipt. See the XPEL warranty information and our PPF warranty guide.

How does Apex Detail Studio check PPF before handover?

Every car at our Al Quoz studio goes through a final inspection before the owner is called, and we repeat the walk-round with the owner at collection.

  1. Panel check. Each panel is inspected under studio lighting for dust, bubbles and distortion.
  2. Edge check. Every edge, corner and seam is checked for lifting and finish.
  3. Function check. Sensors, cameras, lights and moving parts are tested.
  4. Coverage check. The installed film is compared with the job card and quote.
  5. Owner walk-round. We go round the car with you and explain anything that is still settling.
  6. Handover. Warranty details and aftercare instructions are given before you leave.

A standard full-body installation generally takes two to three days, and our installation process guide shows each stage. See also how long PPF installation takes.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check when collecting a car after PPF?

Check edges, corners, seams, trapped dust or hair, large bubbles and distortion in good light. Confirm the coverage matches your quote and that sensors and lights work, and make sure you receive the warranty card, receipt and aftercare instructions.

Are small bubbles in new PPF normal?

Small moisture spots or a slight haze are normal for a few days while water evaporates from under the film. Large air bubbles, dust specks and lifting edges are not normal and should be fixed before collection.

How long does PPF take to settle?

Most moisture clears within days, depending on the film, the weather and how the car is stored. Avoid washing for the first few days and do not pick at edges.

Should PPF edges be wrapped?

Wrapped edges where safe give a cleaner look and are less likely to lift. Some edges cannot be wrapped because of panel shape or trim, and those should be cut cleanly and consistently.

What paperwork should I get after PPF installation?

A receipt naming the film and coverage, the warranty card or registration, and aftercare instructions. XPEL states that its warranty requires professional installation with a warranty card and receipt.

What if I find a problem after collection?

Contact the installer quickly with clear photos. Lifting edges and trapped contamination are easier to fix early, before sand and washing make them worse.
