UAE Car Tint Rules: What Drivers Should Confirm Before Installation

UAE Car Tint Rules: What Drivers Should Confirm Before Installation

A practical compliance checklist for UAE car tint rules: what to confirm, how exemptions work, how tint is measured and what fines can apply.

Share on WhatsApp 8 Oct 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: Under UAE car tint rules as widely reported in 2026, private vehicles can generally have up to 50% tint on the front side windows, rear side windows and rear screen, while the front windscreen must stay clear unless an official exemption, usually medical, has been approved. Over-limit tint can mean an AED 1,500 fine, and in Dubai a vehicle release fee may also apply. Because rules can change and the measurement includes your factory glass, confirm the current limits with the official authorities and your installer before any film goes on.

Key facts

  • Side and rear glass: generally up to 50% tint on private vehicles, as widely reported in 2026.
  • Windscreen: must stay clear unless an official exemption, usually medical, is approved.
  • Fines: over-limit tint can mean an AED 1,500 fine; in Dubai a vehicle release fee may apply.
  • Measurement: what is checked is the glass and film together, not the film on its own.
  • Always confirm: rules can change, so check official sources before you install.

Most drivers choose tint by looking at other cars and picking a shade that looks right. That is a risky way to do it in the UAE. The limits are about how much light passes through the glass, and a film that looks moderate in a shop can measure darker once it sits on factory-tinted glass.

This article is a checklist rather than a film buying guide. It covers what to confirm before booking, how exemptions work, how tint is measured and what can happen if it is over the limit. If you are still deciding between films, read our UAE window tinting guide first, then come back here before you book.

What are the UAE car tint rules in 2026?

The UAE car tint rules, as widely reported in 2026, allow private vehicles up to 50% tint on side and rear glass, with a clear front windscreen. Exemptions for the windscreen are only possible through an official approval, usually on medical grounds.

Glass position Generally reported rule for private vehicles What to confirm
Front windscreen Must stay clear Whether you qualify for an official exemption
Front side windows Up to 50% tint How the limit is measured on your glass
Rear side windows Up to 50% tint Whether factory privacy glass is already dark
Rear screen Up to 50% tint Defroster lines and mirror visibility

These figures are a guide, not legal advice. Rules can differ by vehicle category and can be updated, so check the official UAE government road safety information and the traffic authority in your emirate before installation.

What should I confirm before booking a tint installation?

Confirm the current limit, the glass it applies to and the reading your car will give with film fitted. A reputable installer should help you check all of these.

  1. The current limit. Check that the 50% figure is still current for private vehicles in your emirate.
  2. How the limit is expressed. Confirm whether it refers to tint darkness or to visible light transmission (VLT), because the two are opposites.
  3. Your vehicle category. Commercial, government and specialist vehicles can be treated differently.
  4. Your factory glass. Many SUVs have privacy glass on the rear, which is already dark before any film.
  5. The combined reading. Ask the installer to estimate how the chosen film will measure on your actual glass.
  6. The windscreen. Make sure the quote does not include windscreen film unless you hold an approved exemption.
  7. Paperwork. Keep the invoice showing the film brand, product and shade fitted.

How is window tint measured in the UAE?

Tint is measured by how much visible light passes through the glass and film together. That figure is called visible light transmission, or VLT, and a meter reads the whole window, not the film alone.

This matters because factory glass is never perfectly clear. If a window lets through around 80% of light before tint, and you fit a film that lets through 70%, the result is roughly 80% of 70%, or about 56%. On darker factory glass, the same film will read darker still.

  • A film’s VLT figure on the box is measured on clear glass, not on your car.
  • Rear privacy glass can already be close to, or past, typical limits before any film is added.
  • Two layers of film, such as new tint over old, add together and read darker.

Our explainer on what VLT means in car window tinting covers the numbers in more detail.

Can the windscreen be tinted with an exemption?

The front windscreen can only be tinted if an official exemption has been approved, and the usual grounds are medical. Without that approval, the windscreen must stay clear.

If you think you may qualify, contact the traffic authority in your emirate to confirm the current application process and the documents needed. Do not fit windscreen film first and apply later. Our article on whether a windscreen can be tinted in Dubai explains the exemption question and what you can do about heat in the meantime.

What happens if my tint is over the limit?

Over-limit tint can result in an AED 1,500 fine, and in Dubai a vehicle release fee may also apply. Penalties can be updated, so confirm the current figures with the authorities.

Illegal tint usually has to be removed too, so getting the shade right first time is far cheaper.

  • Do not assume a previous owner’s tint is legal; have it checked when you buy a used car.
  • If your film is bubbling or peeling, replacement is a good time to bring it back within limits.
  • Very dark tint also reduces night visibility; see our guide to tint darkness and night driving.

How does Apex Detail Studio keep tint compliant?

We treat compliance as part of the job, not something the customer has to work out alone.

  1. Ask about your needs. Heat, glare, privacy and any medical considerations.
  2. Check the glass. We note factory privacy glass, existing film and the rear screen condition.
  3. Recommend a shade. We suggest an XPEL PRIME film and shade suited to the current limits on your car.
  4. Remove old film if needed. Over-limit or failing film is removed cleanly before the new film goes on.
  5. Install and inspect. Film is fitted in our Al Quoz studio and checked for edges and clarity.
  6. Document. Your invoice records the film fitted, which is useful if questions come up later.

If heat is your main concern, a lighter nano-ceramic film can reject more heat than a darker dyed film. Read heat rejection versus tint darkness and privacy versus visibility before choosing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the legal tint limit in the UAE?

As widely reported in 2026, private vehicles can generally have up to 50% tint on the front side, rear side and rear windows. The front windscreen must stay clear unless an official exemption is approved. Confirm the current rules with the authorities before installation.

Does the tint limit include factory glass?

Yes, in practice. A meter reads the light passing through the glass and the film together, so factory privacy glass or a slightly tinted window makes the final reading darker than the film alone.

What is the fine for dark tint in Dubai?

Over-limit tint can mean an AED 1,500 fine, and in Dubai a vehicle release fee may apply. Penalties can change, so check the latest figures with the authorities.

Can I get a windscreen tint exemption?

Exemptions are possible only through official approval, usually on medical grounds. Contact the traffic authority in your emirate to confirm the current process and the documents required before fitting any windscreen film.

Is my used car’s existing tint legal?

Not necessarily. Previous owners sometimes fit film darker than the limit, or layer new film over old. Have it checked, and replace it if it reads too dark or has started to fail.

Will Apex fit tint that is over the limit?

We recommend films and shades suited to the current limits for your car and explain the reasons. If you are unsure, send us your model and we will advise before you book.
