Dent Repair and Repainting: What Has to Happen First?

Why a dent has to be repaired and the panel made straight before any primer or colour goes on, and how a proper dent and paint job is sequenced.

Share on WhatsApp 8 Oct 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: The dent has to be repaired first. Before any primer or colour goes on, the panel must be inspected, the metal or plastic pushed back to shape, and any filler kept thin and perfectly level, because paint shows every ripple underneath it. Only then does the repair move to primer, colour matching, basecoat, clearcoat and polishing. If the paint is unbroken and the metal is not stretched, paintless dent repair may avoid repainting altogether.

Key facts

  • Order of work: inspect, straighten the panel, fill and level, prime, match colour, paint, clear, cure and polish.
  • Paintless option: shallow dents with unbroken paint can sometimes be pushed out without repainting.
  • Filler: should be a thin skim to level the surface, not a thick layer to rebuild a badly damaged panel.
  • Materials: steel, aluminium and plastic bumpers each need a different repair method.
  • Paint system: Apex refinishes with a professional PPG system at its Al Quoz studio.

Dents are a daily fact of life in Dubai. Tight mall car parks, door dings and low bollards mean most cars pick up at least one within a year.

Many owners assume a dent is a paint job. It is really a bodywork job first, and a paint job second. If the shape underneath is not right, no amount of colour or clearcoat will hide it, especially on dark and metallic cars under the strong UAE sun. This guide explains what has to happen, and in what order.

What has to happen before a dented panel is painted?

The shape of the panel has to be restored before any paint work starts. A painter can only make a flat, straight surface look good. Paint and clearcoat magnify ripples, low spots and sanding marks rather than hiding them.

Stage What happens What goes wrong if it is rushed
Inspection Damage, panel material, previous repairs and nearby sensors are checked Hidden cracks or old filler are painted over and fail later
Panel repair The dent is pulled or pushed back as close to the original shape as possible Too much filler is needed, which can crack or sink
Filling and levelling A thin skim of filler is applied and block sanded flat Ripples show through the colour, especially in sunlight
Primer and sealer Compatible undercoats seal the repair and give an even base Sanding marks show, adhesion suffers, colour looks patchy
Colour and clearcoat Matched basecoat and clearcoat are applied and cured A visible colour step against neighbouring panels

Can a dent be repaired without repainting?

Sometimes, yes. If the paint is not cracked or chipped and the metal has not been sharply creased or stretched, paintless dent repair (PDR) can massage the panel back into shape from behind using specialist tools. The factory paint stays untouched.

PDR suits shallow, rounded dents such as door dings and small hail marks on steel and some aluminium panels. It usually does not suit:

  • Dents where the paint has cracked, flaked or been scraped.
  • Sharp creases along body lines or panel edges.
  • Plastic bumpers with gouges or tears.

We tell you honestly at inspection whether a paintless route is realistic.

Why does the panel material change the repair?

Steel, aluminium and plastic all behave differently. Steel can usually be worked back into shape and corrected with a thin skim of filler. Aluminium is lighter and is common on bonnets, wings and doors of many premium cars, but it work-hardens and needs dedicated tools so steel dust does not contaminate it and cause corrosion later.

Plastic bumpers do not dent like metal. They deform, crack or tear, and are repaired with heat, plastic welding or flexible repair materials before being primed with an adhesion promoter. Our guides on bumper paint repair and painting plastic trim and body parts cover those jobs in detail.

How much filler is acceptable in a dent repair?

Filler should be a thin finishing layer, not a way to rebuild a panel. Its job is to level small imperfections left after the metal has been straightened, so the surface can be sanded perfectly flat.

Thick filler is a warning sign. It can shrink, crack with heat and vibration, or show as a ring under the paint months later. It also shows up on paint-depth readings when the car is sold. If a panel is too damaged to straighten properly, repair or replacement should be discussed openly rather than hidden under filler.

How is the colour matched after a dent repair?

Colour matching starts with the paint code but does not end there. A code can have several variants, and paint ages in the Dubai sun.

PPG’s procedure for identifying a colour formula starts with the code and then checks variants against the actual car. Our painters spray a test card, compare it in daylight and under studio lights, and plan blending into the next panel where metallic or pearl colours need it. Our colour matching guide explains why blending is part of a good repair, not a shortcut.

How does Apex Detail Studio handle a dent and paint repair?

We agree the scope in writing before any sanding starts.

  1. Inspect. We photograph the damage, check the panel material, measure paint depth where useful and look for previous repairs.
  2. Decide the method. Paintless repair, local repair, or panel repair and repaint, with the reasons explained.
  3. Repair the shape. The panel is straightened with methods suited to steel, aluminium or plastic.
  4. Prepare. Thin filler where needed, block sanding and compatible primers from the PPG refinish system.
  5. Match and paint. The colour is confirmed with a spray-out, then basecoat and clearcoat are applied and cured.
  6. Finish and check. Polishing, then a final check for shape, colour, gloss and texture under different lighting.

Pricing depends on the size and location of the dent, the panel material and how much blending is needed, so we quote after inspection or from clear photos on WhatsApp.

Can a repaired panel be protected straight away?

Not straight away. New paint needs time to cure fully before paint protection film or ceramic coating goes on top. The right waiting period depends on the products and curing method, so we follow the paint system’s guidance rather than a fixed number of days.

If the panel already had PPF on it, the film is removed before repair and new film is fitted once the paint has cured. Our article on PPF after an accident or panel repair explains that process, and our guide to protecting freshly painted panels covers aftercare.

Frequently asked questions

Should a dent be repaired before it is painted?

Yes. The panel has to be returned to its correct shape first, because paint magnifies any ripple or low spot underneath. Filler, primer, colour and clearcoat all come after the bodywork is right.

Can small dents be fixed without paint?

Often, if the paint is unbroken and the metal is not sharply creased or stretched. Paintless dent repair can push the panel back into shape and keep the factory paint. We confirm whether it is suitable at inspection.

Is body filler bad for my car?

Not when it is used properly as a thin levelling layer over well-straightened metal. Thick filler used to rebuild a badly damaged panel can crack or shrink later and shows up on paint-depth readings.

Will the new paint match the rest of the car?

A professional repair uses the paint code, formula variants and a test spray to find the closest match. Metallic and pearl colours often need blending into the neighbouring panel so the eye cannot pick out a colour step.

How much does dent repair and paint cost in Dubai?

It depends on the size and location of the dent, the panel material and how much blending is needed. Apex Detail Studio quotes after inspection, or gives a first view from clear photos sent on WhatsApp.

Can I put PPF on a panel after a dent repair?

Yes, once the new paint has fully cured. Applying film too early can trap solvents or mark soft paint. We confirm the right timing based on the products used.
